Vivek Ramaswamy handed his online critics an extraordinarily easy punchline this week after an attempt to criticize Democratic Ohio gubernatorial rival Amy Acton’s accessibility to reporters immediately backfired.
During a Columbus appearance discussing a gas tax proposal, Republican nominee Ramaswamy turned to assembled journalists and asked when Acton had last given them an opportunity to ask questions. C-SPAN carried Ramaswamy’s September 23 campaign appearance, while the resulting moment quickly spread online.
The answer from reporters was devastatingly simple: “Yesterday.”
It was the sort of political clip that doesn’t even need editing. Ramaswamy appeared to be setting up an attack on his opponent, only for the people standing directly in front of him to puncture the premise.
Reddit’s very left-wing r/Ohio community noticed immediately, and dunked on him accordingly.
“Aren’t you only supposed to ask questions you know the answer to?” one commenter asked. Another replied: “he didn’t get the memo.”
Others were considerably more interested in turning the awkward exchange into material for the rest of the campaign.
One Question, One Answer, Endless Ohio Memes
One commenter offered perhaps the thread’s most memorable assessment: “This guy has the charisma of khaki pants.” Another promptly protested that the comparison was unfair to khakis.
The amusement matters because Ramaswamy and Acton are not trading punches in an obscure primary. They are their parties’ nominees in Ohio’s 2026 gubernatorial race. C-SPAN has covered campaign appearances from both candidates, while Reuters reported this month that each has been pushed to address major Ohio issues, including the growing debate over data centers.
That makes even a 13-second stumble useful ammunition. Acton’s campaign had already been arguing that Ramaswamy followed her lead after she called for an emergency gas tax holiday on September 21. Her campaign said Ramaswamy announced a similar proposal hours later, an accusation coming directly from Acton’s team rather than an independent finding.
Now liberal and anti-Ramaswamy commenters in Ohio have another clip to circulate, and this one is almost comically self-contained.
