In an exclusive Entertainment Weekly cover story, a plethora of new images from the MCU’s next huge installment,ย Captain Marvel, were finally made available to the public eye. Judging by the photos, the film looks to have its own identity and is sure to be one of Marvel’s most exciting films yet.
Included in EW’s exclusive photos are Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel, in full superhero gear, our first look at Starforce (with two returningย Guardians of the Galaxyย characters, Ronan, played by Lee Pace and Korath, played by Djimon Hounsou), a peek at the Skrulls and their villainous leader, Talos, played by Ben Mendelsohn, and a younger Nick Fury (with two whole eyes!).
The reveal also saw some new plot details emerge:
Captain Marvelย sidesteps the traditional origin-story template, and when it begins, Carol already has her powers. Sheโs left her earthly life behind to join an elite Kree military team called Starforce, led by Jude Lawโs enigmatic commander.ย But before long, Carol finds herself back on Earth with new questions about her past. And sheโs got a formidable enemy in the form of the Skrulls โย the notorious Marvel baddies made all the more dangerous by their shape-shifting abilities. Ben Mendelsohn plays their leader Talos, who spearheads a Skrull invasion of Earth.
The superhero flick will also take place smack in the middle of the 90s, which will allow for the return of some former MCU heroes and foes. Star of the film, Brie Larson, also gave some insight into her character, telling EW:
She canโt help but be herself… She can be aggressive, and she can have a temper, and she can be a little invasive and in your face. Sheโs also quick to jump to things, which makes her amazing in battle because sheโs the first one out there and doesnโt always wait for orders. But the [not] waiting for orders is, to some, a character flaw.
Director Anna Boden also had this to say of Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel:
This is not a superhero whoโs perfect or otherworldly or has some godlike connection…ย But what makes her special is just how human she is. Sheโs funny, but doesnโt always tell good jokes. And she can be headstrong and reckless and doesnโt always make the perfect decisions for herself. But at her core, she has so much heart and so much humanity โ and all of its messiness.
