Earlier, news broke regarding Henry Cavill’s exit from the DCEU as Superman. Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. has been considering casting Michael B. Jordan in the role, replacing Cavill.
However, even if Jordan is cast as Superman, don’t expect to see him for a while. Deadline stated that the studio’s top priority lies with the upcoming Supergirl film.
Michael B. Jordan is no stranger to comic book movies or race-swapped roles. The actor is most well known for his portrayal as Erik Killmonger in Marvel’s Black Panther. Jordan also played Johnny Storm AKA Human Torch in the recent Fantastic Four reboot. Even though the movie was a total disaster, Jordan did well in the role and stood out as one of the film’s few positives.
Warner Bros. has put out a statement regarding Cavill’s reported departure:
“While no decisions have been made regarding any upcoming Superman films, we’ve always had great respect for and a great relationship with Henry Cavill, and that remains unchanged.”
It appears that Cavill isn’t entirely done as Superman yet but that doesn’t mean talks couldn’t break apart down the road. From the Deadline article, it looks like WB has contemplated with the idea of drastically altering the canon for a while so Jordan could still be up for the role when the studio decides to make another Superman movie.
This entire ordeal further proves that the DCEU has got to come up with a plan. Treating Superman like James Bond is not the way to go and will further complicate this connected universe in the long run. Is Michael B. Jordan the right guy to play the Man of Steel? Will Henry Cavill stay? I really don’t know the answer to either of these questions and that’s the problem.
