Florida Rep. Byron Donalds mocked gubernatorial rival David Jolly after claiming Jolly had described his agenda as anti-Black. During a campaign speech, Donalds responded with a joke about having been Black his entire life. However, his remarks drew criticism from commenters who argued that his race did not address concerns about his policies.
In a video circulating on X, Donalds recalled Jolly’s accusation and questioned why his opponent would make such a claim. He called Jolly a “fraud” before delivering his response to the crowd. “Breaking news, your next governor has been black his entire life,” he declared.
However, Donalds also made clear that his racial identity was not the basis of his campaign. “But the color of my skin is not what qualifies me to be your governor,” he said. Instead, he pointed to his vision for a Florida that serves residents regardless of their skin color. He also emphasized his commitment to representing communities across the state, from Miami to the Panhandle and Heartland.
Byron Donalds Faces Backlash Over David Jolly’s Anti-Black Agenda Accusation
The exchange sparked debate on X, with critics questioning Donalds’ political record and supporters defending his position on race.
“Breaking news you can be anti black and black,” one user wrote. Another challenged his voting history, stating, “Yeah, but your voting agenda is anti-black, look at your own record.”
Others questioned his political loyalties. “Byron agenda isn’t pro-black or pro-white. It’s pro-mar a lago,” one response read. A separate commenter raised doubts about his qualifications, writing, “Never debated anybody, we honestly don’t know if he’s qualified to be Governor”
However, some defended Donalds’ response, arguing that his policies should matter more than his race. “Judge the plan, not the skin color. Donalds nailed it,” one supporter wrote.
Another criticized Democrats for imposing racial expectations, stating, “I’m tired of Democrats, white or not, telling us black how to be a Black.”
The video does not identify which policies prompted Jolly’s accusation. Donalds’ response leaves that specific policy dispute unresolved.
