Outrage erupted online after a Texas man dressed as an ICE agent and approached people of Mexican descent, asking them to show their green cards.
Reddit user u/Diznel shared a post describing the man’s alleged actions, claiming the incident took place at The Water Tank bar in North Austin. The post included four pictures showing the man inside the bar wearing an ICE costume and covering his face like how actual ICE agents often do.
The man’s ICE costume was not the only thing that drew criticism. According to the Redditor, he walked around the bar asking Mexicans to show their green cards. He allegedly shone a light in their faces while questioning them, mimicking the behavior of an actual ICE agent.
“Right now there is a guy dressed as an ICE agent at the Water Tank in North Austin. He is asking mexicans for their green cards and shining a light in their faces. I told management. He’s being served as if it’s cool to do this,” the Redditor wrote. It remains unclear whether the bar’s management asked the man to leave or allowed him to stay.
In a comment on the post, the Redditor clarified how they knew the man had approached Mexicans at the bar. “Let me clear this up. My MEXICAN friends were asked for their green cards. I will stand with them forever. For all the people replying about how do I know if their Mexicans. Cause I personally know them. How does that excuse this gross costume? It’s like saying wearing a kkk costume is funny,” they wrote.
The man’s behavior was considered offensive because it made light of a serious issue affecting Mexican and other immigrant communities in the United States. By dressing as an ICE agent and allegedly targeting Mexicans to demand proof of their immigration status, he turned the fear and uncertainty surrounding immigration enforcement into a Halloween joke. Such behavior can be particularly upsetting to people who have experienced discrimination or fear being questioned, detained, or separated from their families because of their perceived immigration status.
Critics could also view the costume as a form of racial harassment, since the man allegedly singled out Mexican patrons rather than simply dressing as an ICE agent. For these reasons, the incident was seen as more than an inappropriate costume, as it appeared to mock real concerns about immigration enforcement and the treatment of Mexican communities.
Viewers Outraged After Texas Man Dresses Up as ICE Agent
Many viewers online expressed outrage over the Texas man’s costume and his alleged treatment of Mexicans at the bar. They argued that his behavior was unacceptable and that he should be held accountable. “[Expletive] disgusting,” one person wrote. Another commented, “That costume comes with the same amount of job training.”
Others continued mocking the man and criticizing his decision to dress as an ICE agent. “That guy definitely wishes he was ICE,” one person wrote. Another replied, “Rejected by the military? There’s always the cops. Rejected by the cops? There’s always ICE. Rejected by ICE? There’s always Halloween.”
The incident highlighted the controversy surrounding costumes that imitate law enforcement agencies such as ICE, particularly when they are used to intimidate or harass others. It also drew attention to the harassment that Mexicans may experience in public spaces when others question their immigration status based on their appearance or background.
