While many Americans are relieved they finally have a chance to make a change with their midterm votes, tension remains, regardless of whether there’s any real threat. Reddit user Captjackcos, a Colorado resident claiming to be a disabled veteran, says that he was intimidated by security while trying to reach a ballot drop box beside a church. Staff had apparently blockaded the parking lot surrounding the box, making it difficult for anyone driving in to access it.
“When I asked RM Calvary Church about it, I was told it was private property and people could vote elsewhere,” Jack recalled on r/ColoradoSprings. To make matters worse, OP says the guard threatened him and then gave him the middle finger. “Let him know I was a disabled veteran so wasn’t scared of his thugness but asked if this is how ‘Christian’ they were,” Jack wrote.
This isn’t the only report people have made about Rocky Mountain Calvary Church blocking access to the ballot drop box. Multiple locals have pointed out how the box has caution tape around it, with Reddit user Deaghton confirming Jack’s post: “they have ABSOLUTELY blocked off the ballot boxes and the street to get to them.” That said, countless users are now accusing the church of violating election laws and demanding law enforcement get involved.
According to News Media, Police Did Get Involved at Rocky Mountain Calvary
According to KRDO, police did get involved and appeared at the scene after multiple people called about vehicles blocking in the ballot box. However, when officers arrived, the vans had been removed. Allegedly, the church was holding an event and was intentionally blocking off drivers from entering, while people could still technically walk to the box to drop in their vote. That said, reports and photos of the church impeding people from voting were labeled as “misinformation.”
That said, even though Rocky Mountain Calvary staff weren’t stopping anyone from voting, people were still not convinced the church had ulterior motives. “’They said it was private property and security flipped you off.’ How Christ-like of them,” remarked a commenter. “When will people on any side understand that this just fires up more voters, making it counterproductive? It is literally one of the most anti-American things you can do,” expressed another. “A clear case of voter intimidation which is illegal,” accused a third.
Regardless of whether there was illegal activity going on with this church’s ballot box, OP writes exactly what is questionable here: “Blocking drive-up access and making the box harder to see. Not impossible to vote here, but it is more difficult and may limit access to handicap voters,” they explained. After all, “They can hold their event AND still allow safe access to the drop box.“
