PSN name changes are something the PlayStation faithful have been holding out for since the PlayStation Network went live in 2006. For over a decade, there have been rumblings that someday soon, the PlayStation nation will be able to change their embarrassing usernames on PS4 without having to give up their trophies. It seems that fans won’t have to wait much longer if the new rumors are to be believed.

According to an article written by Kotaku, three-game developers from three different studios told the publication that they are preparing their games for PSN name changes. This in itself is enough to get excited about, but there is further proof that the change may be closer than we think

A fourth developer provided Kotaku with a screen grab of a PlayStation Network profile with an “edit username” option. It came with documentation stating that this is an example of how the functionality of name changing will work on the PSN.

PSN name changes have been something Sony has talked about wanting to do for a while now, but have explained that it is no easy task. The issue lies with having to change names in older games that aren’t retrofitted with the functionality, causing possible bugs as account information is tied to the username rather than another form of identification.

PlayStation fans have been very vocal about wanting this change made over the years, and Sony has never said outright that it will never happen. Xbox Live has been able to support name changes since it’s inception, which only adds fuel to the fire on the PlayStation side.

Kinda Funny’s Greg Miller asked PlayStation’s President of Worldwide Studios, Shawn Layden about the possibility of name changes at last year’s PlayStation Experience in which he gave this response:

“Let me put it this way: I hope we’ll see events occur so that you don’t have to ask me that question next PSX.”

It seems that Layden may just keep this promise. For all your PlayStation news and information, be sure to check back to The Nerd Stash!
