When director Jason Reitman recently unveiled the teaser for the new Ghostbusters movie, it sent the internet into a frenzy of excitement. But the question remained – who was he gonna call? In this case, the evidence points to the original cast of the first two Ghostbusters movies!

In an interview with The Daily Mail, Ernie Hudson, who played Winston Zeddemore in the first two movies, confirmed he and co-stars Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd were up for reuniting for the new Ghostbusters. They played iconic ghost-hunting heroes Peter Venkman and Ray Stantz respectively.

Impressively though, Aykroyd has also written a script treatment for the film. The project is currently under the benevolent eye of Sony Pictures though the studio is wary after the financial failure of the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot.

“Sony have the premise and idea, but obviously for them it is a gamble after the disaster of the female reboot,” a source told The Daily Mail.

But even if the Ghostbusters film goes ahead, it’ll still have to address the absence of Harold Ramis’s Egon. The actor tragically passed away in 2014 at the age of 69.

Hudson misses his former co-star, describing him as “the glue that that […] held everybody together”. However, he’s confident the film will work without him, stating “his spirit’s still there” and that the other Ghostbusters boys are all in.

When addressing the 2016 reboot, Hudson felt that the film was “different“ and didn’t have the vibe of the original. Regardless, he said he was a fan of the main cast members who worked on it.

A third film starring the original cast was in the works for years. In 1999, Dan Aykroyd wrote a script for Ghostbusters III: Hellbent. However, in 2004, Bill Murray stated quite plainly that he didn’t want to return to the franchise. Therefore, the cast considered replacing him with Ben Stiller.

Following Ramis’s death, the original film’s director Ivan Reitman abandoned the project altogether. However, in November 2018, Aykroyd reported that a script was being written and that there was “a possibility of a reunion with the three remaining Ghostbusters”.

And here we are! Are you enthusiastic about the possibility of a reunion between the original Ghostbusters? Sound off in the comments below!
