This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information.

There have been rumors and leaks galore for the PS5 in recent times. Release dates, prices, launch line ups, all sorts. We know the PlayStation 5 is coming. Sony has said as much, however, they haven’t said when it’s coming. All we now know is when it isn’t.

Following their end of year financial results, Sony’s PR team have said the PS5 won’t launch in the next 12 months, i.e. the next fiscal year, meaning we won’t be getting the PS5 until after April 2020 at the earliest.

The news itself was reported by Takashi Mochizuki of The Wall Street Journal. You can see his tweet below:

Sony:
-No next-gen PlayStation launch over next 12 months
-PS Now has been ave. 40% annual growth since launch, now 700,000 users
-Much of Y31.1 billion (difference between past fy op vs this fy op outlook) to be invested to develop next PlayStation console

— Takashi Mochizuki (@6d6f636869) April 26, 2019

The news shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. We haven’t even seen a glimpse of the new console yet, as I’ve said all we know is that it’s coming. Something that has been obvious forever. I’m sure we will be drip fed information until an official announcement is made. Right now, we know the PS5 will be backwards compatible (with at least PS4 games), support 8K for its visuals and will make use of solid-state storage that will reduce loading times significantly.

There have been rumors of launch line ups and games coming early in the systems life cycle including a new Gran Turismo, Grand Theft Auto and a remaster of The Last of Us 2. For now, we must patiently wait and see what rumors come true.

Exactly what the PS5 won’t look like.

With Sony missing E3 this year it could be that an announcement will be saved for next years show seeing the Japanese tech giant coming back with a bang, although that would seem a long time to wait and would allow Microsoft to get ahead of the game with an announcement of their own next-gen console.

Hopefully, Sony will give us an official announcement outside of E3 sometime this year as we’re all keen to see what the new black box of magic will do. In the meantime, stay tuned to The Nerd Stash for all the rumors and concrete pieces of information as we get them and get as much value out of the current generation as you can.
