Over the past week, there were multiple reports stating that the next Call of Duty would not be titled Modern Warfare 4 but instead a reboot of the original critically-acclaimed Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. After teasing an announcement yesterday, Infinity Ward and Activision have finally confirmed those rumors. You can see the full reveal trailer for Modern Warfare down below:

Official Reveal Trailer | Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

While presenting the game to some journalists last week at their studio in California, Infinity Ward explained why they decided to reboot the Modern Warfare series instead of making a sequel. Taylor Kurosaki, who is the Narrative Director for Infinity Ward, stated (Via GameSpot):

“The world we live in right now is more complex than the world was in 2007, or 2009, or even 2011,”

Kurosaki continued:

“Even now the world that we live in, the battlefield is less defined than it’s ever been, and because it’s less defined and because enemies no longer really wear uniforms a lot of the time, that means that civilian collateral damage is a greater part of the equation more so now than it’s ever been. So what does that mean? It means we’re creating circumstances where, as storytellers, we are taking these characters, and we are putting them into complex situations with a lot of pressure on them, and how they respond to that pressure reveals their true nature.”

It seems that Infinity Ward felt it was best to put some of their iconic characters in today’s world instead of continuing on in the original Modern Warfare universe, which may prove to be a fantastic move for the CoD series in the long run. Kurosaki’s statements also seem to validate the reports from Kotaku last week that this would be a “soft reboot” for the CoD series and “It’ll be heavy on troubling, realistic emotional moments, very much inspired by the controversial No Russian campaign in Modern Warfare 2”.

Along with those details on the tone of the narrative for the Modern Warfare reboot, Infinity Ward gave out some information about its multiplayer. Modern Warfare will not have a traditional season pass. Players will be able to stick together throughout the year with new free content and maps. Cross-Play, a feature that is becoming more and more popular by the year, is coming to Modern Warfare as well via console and PC. The details on how this will work exactly are still unknown.

Finally, Modern Warfare features a much-improved game engine, allowing for the detailed graphics and excellent character models we see in the trailer (which was in-game footage).

Modern Warfare will release on October 25th, 2019.
