A New Jersey data center is facing scrutiny after approximately 5,500 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into a local creek, raising concerns about the potential environmental impact. The incident reportedly stemmed from what local officials described as a “computer glitch,” leaving residents with plenty of questions about how such a significant spill could happen.

According to News 12 New Jersey, the spill occurred at an Equinix data center in Secaucus on September 11, releasing approximately 5,500 gallons of diesel fuel into Anderson Creek, a tributary connected to the Hackensack River. Local and state officials responded to the incident, with crews working to contain the fuel and prevent it from spreading farther through the surrounding waterways.

Secaucus Mayor Michael Gonnelli said the spill was caused by a “computer glitch,” although the exact circumstances remain under investigation. Equinix said it was working with local, state and federal agencies on the cleanup and investigating the root cause of the incident, while the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection said the fuel had been contained.

Despite concerns over the spill’s potential environmental impact, officials said the diesel had been contained to Anderson Creek, with no observed impact on the Hackensack River, nearby drinking water intakes or wildlife at the time of reporting. Cleanup efforts remained underway as authorities continued monitoring the affected area.

New Jersey Residents Question How the Data Center Spill Happened

New Jersey residents and other Reddit users were quick to question how a computer issue could result in such a significant spill. “A computer glitch that dumps all your fuel? That sounds odd,” one commenter wrote, while another simply asked, “Why is that even a thing a glitch could do?” Others were more concerned about the potential environmental consequences, with one local writing, “This is horrible, so much good work has been done in the Hackensack River to bring it back to health.”

Accountability was another major concern. “Reading that headline I just know there won’t be any accountability or actual explanation of wtf it means for a ‘glitch’ to spill thousands of gallons of diesel into the river,” one person argued. Another was considerably more direct: “Make them pay. That’s what corporate insurance is for.” Meanwhile, one commenter summed up their broader frustration with the industry in just five words: “Data Centers – Modern Day Superfunds.”

While the spill has been contained, questions remain over exactly how a reported computer glitch resulted in thousands of gallons of diesel entering a local waterway. With cleanup efforts and the investigation continuing, New Jersey residents will likely be watching closely for answers about what went wrong and whether any longer-term environmental effects emerge.
