Performing surgical headshots is a big part of what makes Sniper Elite so fun. The game’s winner formula has been unchanged for two decades now, and the experience is still rock solid. However, Karl Fairburne’s arc can be further developed with the Sniper Elite games going beyond WWII, especially with the Cold War ending of the current storyline.

Sniper Elite is a series of games set in WWII following the story of a German-American sniper. Now while the story of Sniper Elite V2 takes place in the final days of the Second World War, all the other games are considered prequels building up towards that.

This looks to be the plan for the developers to show us the different years and settings of WWII with every installment, but we’ve come full circle now. SE5 and Resistance are near 1945, and that’s probably the endgame for Karl Fairburne’s WWII adventure.

Sniper Elite V2 was the second game of the series, but it completely reboots the story of the first title. Unlike the recent games, however, V2 feels more like we’re fighting during the Cold War era. It’s not just about killing Nazis, but it’s more about extracting info from both sides and preventing the Soviets from recruiting the enemy scientists.

Karl Fairburne’s final quotes in the game are about how the battle has ended but the war hasn’t. He also exactly mentions the Cold War and how he’s its “first soldier,” which is correct based on the storyline. So, does that mean we’re getting a Sniper Elite: Cold War game?

The elite sniper of the series is hunting a Soviet spy at the peak of the Cold War. Interrogations, new gadgets, enhanced stealth mechanics, and new sniper rifles for Karl to drop legendary comments on. A new setting with fresh gear and items is what pushes Sniper Elite to its limits.

WWII is a classic, but it sets its limitations on the story and gameplay alike. You won’t go anywhere further than fighting Nazis, and trip mines and silencers are the pinnacle of innovations here. Sniper Elite has a lot to explore beyond this period, and fingers crossed, we’ll get to see more of it in the future.
