Adele and Oprah sat on the same chairs as Oprah, Meghan, and Harry. Adele’s campaign to promote her new album, 30, brought her to the Oprah Winfrey Show on Monday, where she opened up about how divorcing her husband and becoming a single mother has impacted her career. She also talked about her new song Easy On Me.
Adele and Oprah talked about how Adele relates many of the songs on the album to the aftermath of her divorce from the charity head Simon Konecki. This was a part of excerpts released before the broadcast on Sunday evening in the US. Adele was grilled over some of her “dark” lyrics by Oprah, sitting in the same garden where the talk-show host interview the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in March.
In a preview clip for CBS This Morning, Oprah reads the lyrics from Adele’s song Hold On, and then asks: “What was going on there?”
“I’m such a mess / The harder that I try I regress / I am my own worst enemy / Right now, I truly hate being me,” Oprah recited.
“My friends always would say ‘hold on’ when I would feel like the lyrics in the verse. But it was just exhausting trying to keep going with it.” Adele graciously answered.
“It’s a process: the process of a divorce, the process of being a single parent, the process of not seeing your child every single day wasn’t really a plan that I had when I became a mum,” Adele and Oprah continued.
“The process of arriving for yourself every single day, turning up for yourself every single day. And still running a home, running a business so many people know what I’m talking about and I feel like that as well, I juggled those things as well. And I felt like not doing it any more. It made my feet hurt, walking through all that concrete.”
During Adele One Night Only, CBS will celebrate Adele’s return with an extraordinary concert performance featuring the first taste of her new work in the past six years. On November 14, CBS will broadcast a two-hour event (8:30-10:30 PM ET/8:00-10:00 PM PT), which will be available live and on-demand on Paramount+. Los Angeles will host the special, which will include some of Adele’s chart-topping hits like the newest single Easy On Me, in addition to several never-before-heard songs.
