An Alabama mother says she called Child Protective Services on herself after exhausting every other option to get a specialized bed for her medically fragile son. She hoped CPS could connect her with the help she couldn’t get through her doctor or Medicaid.

TikTok creator Kaneisha, who posts under the account @neshabyrd1995, shared the story online, where she documents her son’s medical journey and her struggle to obtain a specialized safe bed. She also launched a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for the specialized bed she says her son needs.

Kaneisha said her son has complex medical needs that make sleeping especially dangerous. She said he frequently turns off his humidifier, removes his feeding tube while asleep, and has attempted to leave the house during the night. She believes a specialized safe bed would significantly reduce those risks.

She said she repeatedly brought her concerns to her son’s doctor but claimed she was unable to get the necessary paperwork submitted to Medicaid for approval. She said she also contacted a medical supply company in Alabama that was willing to assist with the process, but without the doctor’s support, the request could not move forward. As a result, she said her family was left facing the possibility of paying thousands of dollars out of pocket for the specialized bed.

In one of her TikTok videos, Kaneisha explained that she eventually called CPS on herself, hoping the agency could help her access the resources needed to keep her son safe. However, she said the decision did not lead to the assistance she expected.

She questioned why a report from someone else could potentially result in an investigation over her son’s safety, while her own request for help did not produce a solution. She also said she plans to file a complaint with the Alabama Medical Licensing Board regarding how her concerns were handled.

Alabama Mom’s Story Sparks Healthcare Debate

The video’s comment section was overwhelmingly supportive of the Alabama mother, with many viewers saying her story highlighted larger problems within the healthcare system.

“Our healthcare is so broken,” one user wrote.

Others encouraged her to find a new pediatrician, arguing that her concerns should have been taken seriously and that the Medicaid paperwork should have been submitted.

Other commenters, including parents of children with similar medical needs and people who identified themselves as healthcare workers, said safe beds are often approved for children with documented safety risks. They questioned why the Alabama mother’s request had not been properly reviewed. Many viewers were also shocked by the reported cost of the specialized bed and said families should not have to struggle to afford equipment needed for their children’s safety.

As the story spread, viewers donated thousands of dollars to the Alabama mother’s GoFundMe, offered to help provide safe bed solutions, and shared their own experiences dealing with insurance, CPS, and medical care. Some commenters also pointed out that CPS can sometimes help connect families with resources instead of only investigating them, while others said the situation highlighted the challenges many families face when trying to get support for children with complex medical needs.

What began as a desperate attempt to protect her son has since sparked a broader conversation online about how difficult families say it can be to obtain medically necessary equipment. As her story continues to spread, many viewers hope the attention helps her obtain the specialized bed she says her son still needs.
