There is plenty to track down and enjoy with the Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island, such as the new commendations. Commendations are always a treat. They act as an achievement system and help you discover different aspects of the game you may otherwise pass up. The new DLC brings brand-new commendations, but there is a chance you can miss some of them. So, follow along with our guide, and we’ll lead you to all of the commendations on The Journey to Melee Island.
In Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island, there are 16 commendations. While in the game, find Tall Tales under your Reputation in your Pirate Log. If you look for The Journey to Melee Island, you will discover the list of commendations. We’ve also laid the list out for you below, and any commendation with an asterisk (*) is missable:
- Hired Help (Purchase chef’s uniform)
- Delayed in Transit (Deliver the citizen of Melee’s missing cargo)
- Prison Break (Free Otis)
- Save the Clock Tower (Repair the clock and set it to midnight)
- House Call (Gain entry to the Governor’s Mansion)
- The Journey to Melee Island (Complete The Journey to Melee Island)
- *Pop-Up Pirates (Defeat ghost pirates with root beer: 10)
- *In Good Company (Take a seat in the Scum Bar)
- *Elected Legend (Read about Guybrush’s re-election campaign)
- *Groggy Dog Story (Hear everything Spiffy has to say: 6)
- *A Guided Tour (Take Murray on a tour of the town’s key locations: 9)
- *Melee Island Historian (Purchase the Melee Island history book)
- *Memoirs of a Legend, Vol. 1 (Take in the view at all the memoir spots: 10)
- *Legendary Commendation: Melee Island Investigator (Complete all commendations)
- Cosmetic Reward: Legend of Monkey Island Figurines (Complete The Journey to Melee Island commendation)
- *Cosmetic Reward: Melee by Moonlight (Complete all commendations)
We will explain how you can unlock all of the Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island commendations in the same order as above. However, you don’t have to track them down in that order. We recommend checking the missable ones first. Also, many commendations are connected to others in the game, so read up on them before you explore.
Hired Help – Sea of Thieves Monkey Island Commendation
First, you want to search for 45 Pieces o’ Eight. It isn’t too difficult as you can find them anywhere on the island, like in crates and barrels. Purchase and equip the Chef’s Uniform from the General Shop. Finally, speak to the Chef as you will become an assistant.
Delayed in Transit
Head to the Melee Island jail and grab the Claw Hammer from the table inside. Return to the docks and look for the mast sticking out of the water. It’s there where you want to dive but remember to drop the Claw Hammer first. Once you’re in the water, locate the crate. Cut the ropes and return to the docks.
Use the crane by the sunken ship. After you lower the crane, climb the ladder and move the crane until you can grab the crate. Bring the crate up to the docks and use the Claw Hammer to open it. All that’s left is for you to deliver the goods to the citizen of Melee. He’ll open a shop and give you a voucher for the Governor.
Prison Break
Find the Gunpowder Gummies in the jail and insert one in the lock for Otis, one in the lock for Captain Coco, and one for the cell to the right. Attach a fuse to the gummy for Otis first and use your lantern to light it and blow his cell open. Next, you can blow open the other two the same way. In the empty cell, retrieve the bones and attach them to the skeleton.
Once back in the jail, grab Captain Coco and earn the commendation. However, you also want to head to the Scum Bar and exchange Captain Coco for the talking skull on the wall known as Murray. It will lead to A Guided Tour commendation, something you want to complete before you enter the Governor’s Mansion.
Save the Clock Tower
The Sea of Thieves Monkey Island commendation is straightforward. With the Clock Tower Key in hand, enter the Clock Tower and open the second door up the stairs. You must first remove bones that block the clock. After, use the wheel to set it to midnight. Before you leave, take the bones as you can attach them to the skeleton.
House Call
Since you received the voucher for the Governor from the Delayed in Transit commendation and completed building the skeleton with Murray’s head attached, you can enter the Mansion. Break through the door at the top of the stairs and wait for Guybrush to speak and collapse to steal his Pieces o’ Eight. There are about 200 Pieces in all. Find them in the same room, inside a cabinet in the bedroom, and a table on the main floor.
In Guybrush’s room, you can find a key and a note if you move the curtains and check the bedsheets. Use the key for the chest to gain the root beer you need for the Pop-Up Pirates commendation.
Pop-Up Pirates (Missable)
You can complete this immediately following the House Call commendation. Once you leave the Governor’s Mansion, you will enter a battle with LeChuck. Equip the root beer and spray down 10 enemies to gain the Pop-Up Pirates’ commendation.
In Good Company (Missable)
In Good Company is probably the first commendation you will get. Just enter the Scum Bar and take a seat. Remember to speak to Spiffy the Dog. It will tie into the missable Groggy Dog Story commendation.
Elected Legend (Missable)
Another quick commendation you can get in Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island is the Elected Legend. Inspect one poster about Guybrush Threepwood. There are several around the island.
Groggy Dog Story – Sea of Thieves Monkey Island Commendation (Missable)
Stemming from the In Good Company commendation, speak to Spiffy the Dog and exhaust all six dialogue options for this commendation. Also, if you have enough Pieces o’ Eight, remember to purchase the Stuffed Toy Monkey from the citizen of Melee. You’ll trade the Toy Monkey to Spiffy to get his bone for the skeleton. Also, remember to speak to Spiffy yet again once you beat LeChuck.
A Guided Tour (Missable)
Before you attach Murray’s head to the skeleton, keep him with you and visit 9 locations:
- Alleyway by Piranha Poodles
- Church
- Clock Tower
- General Store
- Jail
- The Jetty Docks
- The Lookout
- The Scum Bar
- The Streets near the guards
Melee Island Historian (Missable)
A simple commendation that requires 200 Pieces o’ Eight, you want to return to the citizen of Melee and shop at his store. Buy the Melee Island History Book and earn this Sea of Thieves Monkey Island commendation.
Memoirs of a Legend, Vol. 1 – Sea of Thieves Monkey Island Commendation (Missable)
The 10 spots you must visit are noticeable, thanks to the red ink bottles. Also, don’t forget to hear Guybrush out when you find him in the Mansion:

- General Store (inside)
- Jail (inside)
- Mansion (inside and outside)
- Overlooking the Church
- Scum Bar (front and rear)
- Street corner (facing the Clock Tower)
Legendary and Cosmetic Commendations
As long as you gather all of the commendations above, you will earn The Journey to Melee Island, Melee Island Investigator, Legend of Monkey Island Figurines, and Melee by Moonlight. You can enjoy unlocking all the new achievements while appreciating some new cosmetic gear.
