A California mother’s parenting decision has sparked a heated debate online after she revealed she had started charging her recently graduated daughter $300 a month in rent before she heads off to college. The family dilemma has left viewers sharply divided over whether the move teaches responsibility or goes a bit too far.
In the video shared to both TikTok and Reddit, the mother begins by asking viewers one simple question:Â “Am I in the wrong?” She then explains why she turned to social media for opinions on her dilemma. According to the mother, her daughter recently graduated from high school and is due to start college in the fall. She says she told her daughter that if she planned to continue living at home, she would need to contribute $300 a month toward household expenses.
“After my daughter graduated high school I told her she had to start paying $300 a month rent and that was gonna help with rent and utilities. She is supposed to be going to college in the fall. But if she was going to be continuing living here she needed to pay rent and utilities.”
The situation becomes more complicated, however, as the mother reveals her daughter has yet to find a job. She says that because her daughter is not currently earning an income, she has started keeping a running tab of the money she lends her.
“So, she has yet to find a job still. So at this point, I’m not contributing to her food, I’m not contributing to her gas. The other day she asked to borrow money and I told her I will add it to the back of her tab. So the $300 a month rent and the $30 I gave her for gas, I’m going to add that. So now she owes me $330 and I will continue to add on her tab until she pays it in full with her check.”
She adds that she has been encouraging her daughter to find a job. If she is still unemployed by the time she receives her student loans or financial aid for college, the mother says she expects her to use some of that money to cover her share of the household expenses.
The mother also admits she is unsure whether to ask her daughter to move out. According to the mother, she has already taken away her daughter’s bedroom, meaning she is currently sleeping on the couch. The video ends with her asking viewers what else she should do in the situation.
Social Media Divided Over Mother’s Parenting Decision
Many viewers felt the mother’s expectations were unfair given that her daughter had recently graduated and was still looking for work. One Reddit user wrote, “If my son or daughter is actively searching for work and already enrolled and starting school in the fall, I would cut them some slack.” A TikTok commenter echoed that sentiment, writing, “this is wild…..is not easy for college graduates to find a job right now, let alone a high school graduate.”
Others took issue with specific parts of the mother’s approach. One TikTok user commented, “Using a student loan to pay your parents ‘rent’ is wild,” while another asked, “this screams i had kids but can’t afford them.” A Redditor also questioned, “You want her to pay rent, but she doesn’t have a room?”
Not everyone disagreed with the mother’s parenting style, however. One TikTok user simply replied, “No, you are not wrong.”
Whether viewers saw it as tough love or going too far, the mother’s video clearly resonated with parents online. As the debate continues, opinions remain split over where parents should draw the line between teaching responsibility and offering support during a child’s transition into adulthood.
