A North Carolina campus, UNC Chapel Hill, is being blasted by students after allegedly not sounding an alert when a racist man got onto campus and harassed students. One student calls out the university for not taking the situation seriously. Her video has over 130,000 views and over 29,000 likes.
The alleged incident occurred when a man with no known ties to the North Carolina university “came on campus and harassed, assaulted, and threatened the safety of numerous black students.” Students claim the man broke property, pushed them around, and followed them. Then the man “made his way into a room where several black student organizations were hosting a Love Island watch party.” He proceeded to disrupt the event by throwing things and yelling racist remarks. At one point, he allegedly reached into a bag. Thankfully, the man didn’t have a weapon. However, this was “such a traumatizing experience” for the students present.
One North Carolina student said she learned about the incident from those who were present. She states, “UNC Police released a statement that they determined that it wasn’t enough of an ongoing threat to release an Alert Carolina notification.” The student continues by stating it’s terrifying for a situation like this to occur and then have to figure out what happened on her own. She argues that racism is still making black students “feel like they don’t belong in certain spaces.” This forces them to “think about [their] safety in situations where [they] should just get to be students.” While she isn’t expecting the campus to prevent every racist person from showing up, she does expect that when something does happen, they should feel like “somebody has their back.”
Many Call Out North Carolina University
Several comments on the TikTok video call out the university for not notifying all students of the incident. One commenter says, “So UNC would have rather this person harmed the students before they made a notification.” Meanwhile, others state they still haven’t seen anything regarding what happened. One comment reads, “I’m in Durham on the border of Chapel Hill and have heard NOTHING!” Another adds, “Never heard this on TV. I live only 30 mins away. THANK YOU for reporting and stay safe.”
Additionally, many blast the university for not taking the alleged incident seriously. One commenter states, “If they don’t handle it now, the man will come back/inspire others.” Another commenter adds, “A stranger made it on campus in a student’s room, and that doesn’t warrant enough of a threat?!” Another questions where the police were during the situation. They state, “Campus police should’ve put the dorms in lockdown.”
Nobody was harmed during the alleged incident, and since the North Carolina student posted her video, some reports have made it into the local news.
