The ongoing North American finals of Apex Legends have had to be forcefully postponed because hackers added cheats to the game. The cheats were added while the finals were in progress, and they gave competitors abilities they shouldn’t have. According to reports, pro players in the Apex Legends North American finals unceremoniously got game-breaking abilities like aimbots, and wallhacks, even though they had nothing to do with it.
The sudden addition of cheats ruined the competition, and of course, the event itself. One player even got banned for using cheats before Respawn decided to bring the tournament to a half for the time being. The announcement was made via X (formerly Twitter) and Respawn will share more information later.
The hack came to light when DZ_Genburten suddenly got the ability to see players through walls and immediately told everyone what was happening and turned his game off. Continuing to play could have resulted in an auto ban and possibly even hacking accusations.
Apex Legends Esports North American Final – Hackers Forced Everyone To Use Cheats
Video clips are floating around online that show the hack in progress, which includes ImperialHal being hacked and getting an aimbot which resulted in the game’s anti-cheat system kicking him out.
It is entirely unknown how someone was able to hack into a private esports lobby and give everyone cheats, but it is concerning, to say the least. And how this can affect players who aren’t playing competitively is a question being raised by fans online.
According to the Anti-Cheat Police Department on X, this is called RCE (Remote Code Execution) and is being used in Apex Legends and could be possible on other EA titles. They recommend that fans do not play any games for now, because this method could also compromise your entire computer’s security.
This is unprecedented in the world of esports, and Respawn and EA are likely trying their hardest to find out how this happened and how to prevent it from happening in the future. Once they get things under control, the finals will likely pick up where they left off.
