An Arizona man was shocked when his water bill suddenly jumped despite him being away from home for three and a half weeks. When he questioned the charge, the water company told him it had estimated his usage based on the previous year and asked him to pay $25 to have the meter checked. The situation quickly sparked debate online over whether the company handled the bill properly.

The story was shared by TikTok user notnoahosborne, whose video received several hundred thousand views. Many viewers expressed frustration with the company’s response, while others said estimated utility bills are common and may be corrected once an actual meter reading becomes available.

In the video, the man explains that he had recently moved into the home and started his water service in January. After receiving an unexpectedly high bill, he contacted the company to find out why his usage had increased even though he had been away for much of the billing period.

According to the company, it had been unable to obtain a reading from his water meter. Instead, it estimated his usage using the amount of water recorded for the property during the same month the previous year.

That explanation raised another issue for the Arizona man. Since he had only moved into the property that year, the previous resident’s water usage did not reflect his own usage. The man also questioned why the company had not notified him that it could not read the meter. He said his roommate was able to check the meter and obtain a reading when asked.

The company reportedly explained that it uses vehicles equipped to electronically read water meters as they pass homes. Despite this, the man was still asked to pay an additional $25 to have the meter checked.

Internet Reacts to Water Bill Dispute in Arizona

Many commenters sided with the Arizona man and questioned why he should have to pay to correct a problem caused by the company. Some suggested that the company should have used an average of his recent bills instead of relying on the previous year’s usage. Others encouraged him to contact local news outlets or report the company to state officials. One commenter wrote, “This is fraudulent billing. Report it to the state AG.”

However, others defended the company’s use of estimated billing. Several users explained that utility companies commonly estimate usage when they cannot obtain an actual meter reading. They said the bill can later be adjusted once an accurate reading is available, potentially resulting in a credit if the original estimate was too high.

Some commenters also pointed out that electronic meter reading has been used for years and said the man was overreacting. Others shared their own stories of unexpectedly high water, gas, and electric bills caused by estimated readings, showing that the situation may not be as unusual as it first appeared.

Ultimately, viewers disagreed over whether the company made a simple billing error or treated the Arizona man unfairly. Either way, nobody seems eager to discover their next water bill was based on someone else’s shower habits.
