Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans have been buzzing with excitement following recent revelations about the future of the franchise. A new report suggests that Marvel is considering a soft reboot of the MCU in 2027 with the release of Avengers 6. This reboot could pave the way for the return of beloved characters who have previously retired from the franchise.

In a recent interview with Variety, Kevin Feige, the mastermind behind the MCU, hinted at the expansive future of the universe.

โ€œThe great thing about Marvel truly is how many wonderful, interesting characters we have in the comics โ€” theyโ€™ve been at it for 85 years. Even after 32 movies, it feels like weโ€™ve barely scratched the surface.โ€

Kevin Feige

This statement has led many to believe that Avengers 6 will conclude the current phase of Marvel movies set to release on May 7, 2027.

Joanna Robinson, the author of the new book MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, shed more light on this possibility during her appearance on The Watch podcast. She revealed:

“We have a quote from Kevin Feige sort of implying that, like, Secret Wars will serve as a soft reboot in which they can prune everything… That’s not to use a Loki-ism. [They’ll] prune everything that’s not working and just keep what is [working], or bring back people you thought were gone forever.”

Joanna Robinson

Robinson’s book delves deeper into the potential future of the MCU. A notable excerpt from the final chapter titled How Much We Have Left recounts a meeting with Feige. During this meeting, Feige showcased a 1988 poster illustrated by Ed Hannigan and Joe Rubinstein, featuring hundreds of Marvel characters. This gesture was perceived as an indication of the vast number of characters that could be introduced or reintroduced to the MCU after an Avengers 6.

How the MCU is Laying the Groundwork for a Reboot

The idea of rebooting the MCU, even if it’s a soft reboot, might raise eyebrows considering the franchise’s monumental success. However, with Marvel acquiring rights to former Fox Marvel characters, including the X-Men and the Fantastic Four, and the need to streamline the MCU timeline, a reboot seems plausible. As Robinson pointed out, this would allow Marvel to retain successful elements and reintroduce iconic characters like Iron Man, T’Challa, Thanos, and Steve Rogers.

Evidence of this potential reboot can already be seen in Loki season 2, which drops hints about Avengers: Secret Wars reshaping the MCU timeline. If Feige’s vision aligns with the comics, then Secret Wars could serve as the pivotal reset point, especially given the comic arc’s conclusion with the multiverse’s destruction and the emergence of new narratives.
