The Dream Visitor is a character often appearing in your dreams during long rests in Baldur’s Gate 3. At first, you may not understand who they are or why they visit you, but as the story progresses, you will learn more and more about them. At one point, when you try to complete the Lae’Zel companion quest, you will meet this character and have to decide whether you should kill the Dream Visitor. You’ll be prompted to do so by Vlaakith, one of the deities, who is the queen of Lae’Zel. We’ll describe all the possible scenarios to help you choose the one that suits you best.
Who Is the Dream Visitor in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Also known as the Guardian in Baldur’s Gate 3, the Dream Visitor will often appear in your dreams; their main task is to protect you from the harmful effects of the Mind Flayer tadpole. It is worth noting that you choose the appearance of this character yourself right after you create your character from the start of the game.
At first, you may distrust the Dream Visitor and their words, but if you pay attention and listen to them, you will learn plenty of useful things. The main information they convey when they appear in your dreams is about the tadpole in your head and that it is worth mastering the benefits it provides and taking advantage of these powers. At first, players may not want to listen, but don’t be fooled because this character will be very useful to you and prevent you from becoming an Absolute cultist or even a Mind Flayer.
The first time you can meet them outside a dream is when you complete the Lae’Zel side quest when you visit Githyanki Creche. Here, you will meet Vlaakith, one of the deities to whom Lae’Zel is subject. One of the tasks that Vlaakith will give you is to enter the Planecaster and kill the prisoner there. As it turns out, this prisoner is your Dream Visitor, and from this point on, you will have three main options for how you can proceed, which we will describe below.
Refuse Vlaakith’s Request
The first and probably the most impulsive decision would be to immediately refuse the deity’s request. If you do this, you won’t waste time visiting Planecaster and doing the other things that need to be done there. Instead, Vlaakith will get angry and kill your group right away, so you’ll have to start over. If you pretend to want to complete this task and simply leave the room without doing anything, this decision will cause Lae’Zel to become hostile to you and leave the group. Moreover, Lae’Zel will attack, so you’ll need to kill her to move on.
This choice is the worst because you lose one of your companions, completely blocking the ability to complete other tasks related to Lae’Zel and the possibility of having a romance with her. You should choose other options if you don’t want to lose her as a companion.
Kill Dream Visitor
The second decision is no better than the previous one. If you do decide to listen to Vlaakith, you can go to the Planecaster and meet the Dream Visitor. After a short dialog with them, you can attack them, and if you choose this option, you’ll regret it immediately.
In fact, after your attack, the Dream Visitor will not die, but immediately heal and will be disappointed with your choice. Actually, this task was a test that you will fail, causing the Guardian to distrust you and tarnish your relationship. Now, they will not communicate with you or appear in your dreams, but you will still be closely connected because you cannot live without each other due to the tadpole in your head.
Now that you know that the Dream Visitor cannot be damaged or die, you will realize that Vlaakith has tricked you. Moreover, when you get back to their camp, you’ll be attacked, so get ready to fight.
Persuade Lae’Zel Not to Kill the Dream Visitor
This option will be the best choice because, in this case, you do not lose Lae’Zel as a companion and will be on good terms with the Dream Visitor. To achieve this result, you’ll need to listen to Vlaakith and go to Planecaster to meet with the Guardian.
So when you do so, don’t attack them, but instead, talk to Lae’Zel and persuade her that it’s better to let them live. The Dream Visitor will thank you for your trust, and you can move on. This way, you will distract Lae’Zel from her queen without losing her as an ally and maintain a good relationship with the Guardian. It is worth noting that when you go back, you will still be attacked, so be careful.
In the end, we have to say that the final decision is up to you, but we recommend using the last option.
