Nearly after a decade of screen time in the MCU, Black Widow is getting her own movie. But, with what rating? Many have speculated there to be an R-rating but the president of the MCU puts these rumors to rest. Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, was at the Captain Marvel premiere to present some truth to these rumors.
Kevin Feige expressed this information via an exclusive interview with Comicbook.com, stating they will not be using that rating for the Black Widow movie. He was approached with questions of these rumors. Feige countered with,
“It never was going to be. Somebody writes, ‘I hear it’s R-rated!’ And then everybody writes it up.”
These rumors were in response to the other highly successful Marvel properties such as Deadpool and Logan receiving R-ratings. Not to say there will never be an R-rated MCU film in the future, but for now, it appears that Feige is happy continuing with a formula that works. Nevertheless, Black Widow still has a story similar to these characters in terms of breaking the creative boundaries. But, the story written for the Black Widow movie does not appear to be needing an R-rating.
The popularity and the notoriety of Natasha Romanoff make it easy for a PG-13 rating to work well for this movie. Since the release of Iron Man, all of the MCU films have been PG-13 to allow for a broader audience to enjoy. Some of that audience has now grown with the films but Marvel would be alienating their younger audience with an R-rating. Nevertheless, Marvel Studios and the general audience will be making another blockbuster. Stay tuned for more about Marvel films for Phase 4.
