While post-apocalyptic enthusiasts will claim bugs are full of nutrients and protein, very few people, at least in the States, will take up on the offer to munch on a plate of insects. Desires for exotic delicacies aside, one Illinois man definitely was not thrilled to discover that his can of Kroger’s chili powder was absolutely filled with tiny, living bugs. Granted, he does claim that the “best before date” passed around three weeks ago, but this was still a new pack of chili powder. Still, anyone would be both infuriated and horrified to find out your can of spice is an ecosystem for creepy-crawlies.
“These live and dead bugs make up the first inch of the container,” the Illinois man points out in his photo of the Kroger’s chili powder posted on r/Wellthatsucks. Indeed, the top of the container is seriously packed with tiny insects, likely enjoying their feast of spicy goodness, which was supposed to be the seasoning of his “big pot of Chili Con Carne.” Clearly, that can is done for, but some in the comment section worry that this can might not be the only infested box of food the man has in his cabinets.
Luckily, he claims that he checked everywhere else and didn’t report on any other bug-filled boxes or cans. So either this Kroger’s chili powder had been growing its family of buggers for a while since purchase, or he stored it in a place he’s yet to discover more infestation. If the latter is the case, it shouldn’t take him too long, as he claims to be a “neat freak.”
That said, many find the discovery of that many bugs inside a can of spice to be rather terrifying and funny, for the jokes and puns, at least. “Thanks for unlocking a new fear i guess,” remarks a commenter. “SEASONING IS BUGS,” exclaims another Redditor. “Yeah I was expecting ‘full of bugs’ to mean there were a lot of visible bugs in the chili powder. That is all bugs. It is literally a container of bugs,” says a third. “That brings new meaning to hatch chili,” quips a fourth.
At the very least, he discovered the infestation of his Kroger’s chili powder right from the get-go, without having reached the bottom of the can to realize what he’d been eating.
