Horses are a huge part of 2017’s Breath of the Wild, and for good reason. The lands of Hyrule are massive, and Link’s adventures take him across every square inch of the map. Thankfully, there’s a ton of variety when it comes to the horses Link can tame and ride. For instance, there are spotted horses, solid-color horses, gentle horses, wild horses, and even one giant mysterious horse. But above all, one horse in the game is entirely unique and hard to find. It’s a pure white horse known as the Royal White Stallion. If you’re looking to have Link ride like a king atop this special horse, we’ve got you covered!
How to Get the Royal White Stallion Quest in BoTW
To get the Royal White Stallion in BoTW, you need to head to Outskirt Stable. This location is north by northwest of the Great Plateau, just south of Aquame Lake and near the Rota Ooh shrine. This may be one of the first stables you run into after leaving the tutorial area. Once you get there, be sure to speak to a man named Toffa, usually standing outside the stable.
Speak to him, and Toffa will tell you the story of the mysterious royal white stallion. This horse was rumored to be descended from Princess Zelda’s own mount that can be found near Safula Hill, not far from the stable. Tell Toffa you’ll find the horse, and he’ll give you the “Royal White Stallion” quest in Breath of the Wild.
Now that you’ve got the quest, you’ve just got to find the horse. From Outskirt Stable, follow the road north until you cross Manhala Bridge. After crossing the bridge, turn right at the intersection and continue following the road up and around a hill. If you’re riding a horse, this is the point where we recommend you dismount. The white stallion you’re looking for is in the area. It’s easily one of the most skittish horses in the entirety of Breath of the Wild.
From here, it shouldn’t be terribly hard to spot the Royal White Stallion, with its pure-white coat making it stand out against Breath of the Wild’s usual scenery. Good news — you’ve found the horse! Now comes the hard part — taming the wild beast.
How to Tame the Royal White Stallion in BoTW
Taming the Royal White Stallion is the most challenging part of the BoTW quest since it’s incredibly jumpy and difficult to tame. In order to get close enough to the horse, you’re going to want to have some kind of stealth bonus equipped. You can improve your stealth stat by donning the Sheikah Set of armor, available for 800 rupees in Kakariko Village, or by drinking stealth potions. Such tinctures can be made at any cooking spot in Hyrule.
Even with your stealth buffs in play, you’ll want to be careful that the horse doesn’t see you while you approach and run away. Be sure to stay crouched and slowly move while you make your way up to her. If you’re feeling adventurous, it’s also possible to climb one of the nearby trees and use the paraglider to land on the horse’s back. However, this approach risks the horse bolting and taking off across the area, causing you to start from square one.
Once you approach the Royal White Stallion, you will have to get onto its back and tame it. You’ll need to upgrade your stamina a bit before being able to do this successfully. At least two wheels of stamina should do nicely. Additionally, you can comsume stamina elixirs or stamina-boosting meals.
Once you’re on the white horse, spam L for dear life to soothe the horse. It’s the same mechanic used for taming any other horse in Breath of the Wild, but be warned, it will take longer. If you get thrown off, don’t be afraid to refresh your stamina and get back on the horse. When you finally get the white stallion tamed, you’ll find that it allows for five galloping boosts, one more than the maximum four boosts you’ll find on any normal horse.
To complete the “Royal White Stallion” quest, simply ride the white horse back to Toffa at the Outskirt Stable. Talk to Toffa, and he’ll reward you with the royal bridle and royal saddle, unique pieces of gear that you’ll now be able to equip to any horse you tame. Unfortunately, they don’t actually provide any stat benefits, but they are really gorgeous customization options that make Link’s horse rival the princess’ any day.
