Brie Larson is back in the official trailer for The Marvels. The new movie is Larson’s first credited appearance as Carol Danvers, a.k.a Captain Marvel, since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Larson appeared uncredited in a mid-credits scene in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The trailer sees Danvers contacted by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) as she continues her work in space. However, that work is about to be interrupted as she is forced to team up with Monica Ranbeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan, a.k.a. Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani). This team-up is the result of their powers becoming interconnected as they swap places when their abilities are activated.

This isn’t the only obstacle the all-female team will face. The trailer for The Marvels also gives us a better look at the villain Dar-Ben (Zawe Ashton). The villain refers to Captain Marvel as “the annihilator.” She says to Danvers, “You took everything from me, and now I’m returning the favor.” It appears Dar-Bell has something to do with the interwoven powers of the three heroines, as Rambeau says, “She’s entangled our light base powers.”
Rambeu also explains these powers in detail. Danvers can absorb light, Rambeau can see it, and Kamala can turn light into physical matter. While these skills are undoubtedly helpful in the fight against evil, Dar-Bell seems to be weaponizing them for destructive purposes. As Larson’s character Danvers says, “She’s targeting every planet we call home.”
Three years after she took home the Oscar for her performance in Room, Brie Larson joined the MCU as Captain Marvel. While the character hasn’t been quite as iconic as Iron Man or Captain America, she also hasn’t had as many films to her credit as such heroes. The Marvels is the first official sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, and it’s been subject to numerous delays.
However, with the official trailer finally out, we can rest assured that Brie Larson’s return in The Marvels will take place on November 10, 2023.
