We remember Joe Blackburn’s statement pre-Season of the Witch, right? The one where he more or less told us that Bungie was leaving Gambit to die. Bungie felt community consensus over Gambit was such that there’d be little pushback. But I’m here to say that’s rather assumptive; leaving Gambit to die is a Destiny 2 tragedy for those who love it. It’s a crying shame that Gambit will no longer receive any work. It won’t improve or decline; it will be stuck in stasis.
Bungie is Making a Mistake by Leaving Gambit to Die
Now, it must be said that Gambit is no longer a fan favorite in Destiny 2. In a primarily PvE community, having a game mode that crosses the line between PvP and PvE was always like to struggle. The players who enjoy PvE rarely dive into the PvP side of the game, and the same goes for the PvP players. A PvPvE game mode couldn’t have done well to begin with. However, Gambit is pure gold for players like us, who enjoy quite a bit of both.
Regarding Gambit, you get the best of both worlds regarding playstyles. It’s rare to find a game that truly mixed PvE and PvP into a game mode that can be enjoyable to everyone who likes the in-between stuff. I find there’s nothing quite like invading an enemy team, adding a bunch of health to their Primeval, and then returning to my side of the arena to take out my Primeval. It’s exhilarating, high-paced, and super fun.
A big reason why Bungie hasn’t received the type of enthusiasm for their PvPvE mode has a lot to do with the fact that they haven’t put work into it. While there have been many opportunities and time to change the game mode, Bungie has neglected, making Gambit much less appealing to players. That said, Bungie has, undeniably, watched the unique game mode be buried at its own hand, and rather than fixing it after all these years, they just threw it on the permanent backburner to take up space and create more disappointment.
What Bungie Needs to do to Save Gambit
The fact that Bungie is leaving Gambit to die is truly devastating for so many Destiny 2 players. So many of my Destiny 2 friends who enjoy playing the same way I do have drifted off and no longer play the game. An old daily ritual of ours was to hop into the game and Fireteam-up to get ready to load into a Gambit lobby and proceed to play for hours. With the promise of no improvements or reworking, the game doesn’t have the same charm that it used to in their eyes.
What Gambit needs is improvement and innovation. There are admittedly a bunch of flaws, from boring maps that need switching up to Primeval fights that are way too easy. Ideally, the whole balance of the mode needs a rework so that gaining reputation doesn’t take such a painfully long time. These things should have been improved quite a while ago, but Bungie made it evident through its sporadic updates that it wasn’t overly interested. But now it’s all been made official, I’m worried Bungie may suffer for it.

After hearing Joe Blackburn’s statement, many of the few players who couldn’t get enough of Gambit have sworn off Bungie’s games. Why continue playing a game if you’re unwilling to put work into making your masterpiece a game for every player? Sure, it may have been great for those who enjoy only one play style and don’t hover over the line rather than playing both sides but giving up on an entire demographic of players is unacceptable. It’s unfair to a portion of the Destiny 2 community and shows a massive lack of care for the less popular aspects of the game.
