A commencement ceremony at Stanford University in California went viral after a group of students staged a walkout during a speech by Google CEO Sundar Pichai. The demonstration was organized by Stanford Students for Justice in Palestine and was intended to protest Google’s involvement in Project Nimbus, a cloud computing and artificial intelligence contract with the Israeli government. Videos of the walkout quickly spread online, turning the protest into a widely discussed topic on social media.

The footage circulated across multiple platforms, including Reddit and X (formerly Twitter), where it received thousands of upvotes, shares, and comments. Many users praised the students for making a public statement during one of the university’s most high-profile events, while others debated whether commencement ceremonies were the appropriate venue for political protests.

The video shows California graduates standing up and leaving their seats while Pichai continues speaking on stage. Several students can be seen carrying signs, while at least one participant waves a Palestinian flag. Some protesters chant “Free Palestine” as they exit the ceremony. The walkout unfolds as other graduates remain seated, creating a visible split between those participating in the protest and those who choose to stay for the speech.

The demonstration aimed to draw attention to Project Nimbus, a roughly $1.2 billion cloud and AI contract involving Google, Amazon, and the Israeli government. Critics of the project argue that it supports Israeli surveillance and military operations, while supporters maintain that it provides cloud services to government agencies. The contract has been the subject of controversy for several years and has also sparked internal disputes within Google. In 2024, the company fired more than two dozen employees who protested the contract, further increasing public scrutiny of the project.

The walkout also comes amid broader criticism of technology executives appearing as commencement speakers. Just weeks earlier, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt faced repeated boos during a commencement speech at the University of Arizona. During that address, audience members reacted negatively whenever Schmidt discussed artificial intelligence, automation, and data centers, showing growing concerns among some students about the impact of AI on future employment.

Internet Reacts to Stanford Walkout in California

Online reactions to the Stanford walkout in California were mixed, though many of the most visible comments expressed support for the students’ protest. Many users questioned why Stanford selected Pichai as a commencement speaker, particularly after Schmidt’s reception at Arizona. Critics argued that universities increasingly favor wealthy corporate leaders over speakers they consider more inspiring or relatable. “He must be used to listening to himself talk,” one user wrote.

Others connected the protest directly to Project Nimbus, saying the demonstration reflected wider frustration with Google’s policies. Some praised the California students for taking a stand and bringing attention to an issue they believe deserves more scrutiny. Others mocked Pichai for continuing his speech despite the walkout.

The video sparked a broader conversation about political activism on college campuses, corporate influence in higher education, and the role commencement ceremonies should play in public protest. While many viewers praised the students for making a statement, others questioned whether graduation was the right setting for the demonstration.
