A California woman strongly alleged she was treated inhumanely during her stay in an ICE facility, so much so that she shared her experience on TikTok. Now, she and her husband are taking steps to fight back and spread awareness.
According to Hanne (TikTok/Hanneengan), she claims to have spent nine days in an ICE facility after she’d been taken during a green card interview. She married her husband here in the U.S. and, 400 days later, was incarcerated after she’d been taken during a green card interview. And during her stay, Hanne claims she was “severely medically neglected” when her type 1 diabetes wasn’t being properly maintained.
Not only did she say the ICE facility operators ignored her and “failed to treat” her in time—as people with type 1 diabetes need insulin frequently to stay alive—she had her medical condition incorrectly listed as type 2. She plays a recording left for her husband by an ICE officer. They admit their mistreatment of her in the facility. From the get-go, they admit they thought
But what happened next was shocking. While in ICE captivity, Hanne said her medical needs were not met. She said facility operators ignored her and “failed to treat” her in time. Hanne states, “My insulin and CGM reader was confiscated” and she had no access to her life-sustaining supplies. Finally, in November, she was able to see a doctor but only because her health hit a wall. Her blood sugar went above 500 and she was “extremely sick.”
People share their mistreatment by ICE agents
This is not the first time ICE agents have been caught neglecting people taken and incarcerated; people on Hanne’s TikTok video wanted to share their experience as well. Not to mention taking an opportunity to condemn ICE for their actions.
Among the top comments, a TikTok user detailed a rather disturbing experience. According to the viewer, not only did ICE take her “seizure medicine,” but she also had to take off her “seizure alert bracelet.”
Another commenter called out ICE, saying it’s “never appropriate to treat people inhumanely.” In the thread that followed, there was a call to abolish ICE, and it was compared to the Third Reich.
One TikTok user asked, “Can you even sue them?” Hanne responded that “it’s hard.” Others were distraught by the mistreatment, particularly from people who shared they were also type 1 diabetic.
The medical neglect Hanne endured could have cost her her life. Within a few days of not having her insulin, she says she could have easily “died.” What’s even more baffling is that Hanne has “no criminal record” but was taken anyway. She states, “But even if I did, this is not okay.”
