If you’re still committed to your Xbox One, you may be wondering if you can play Bethesda’s epic space odyssey, Starfield, or if you have to make the upgrade to current-gen consoles. The game is one of the biggest releases of the year and marks a significant shift in the landscape for Microsoft in terms of high-profile exclusive titles. While there isn’t necessarily an official port of Starfield for the Xbox One, there is a method that allows players on the older console to still experience the game. Here’s everything you need to know about whether you can play Starfield on Xbox One.
How to Play Starfield on Xbox One
Starfield is playable on Xbox One but is only available via cloud gaming. For now, this is the single method available to players on the older console and will naturally require a pretty sturdy internet connection in order to run the game at its full potential.
To stream the game on Xbox One, players will need to subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Once a subscription to the service is set up, Starfield can be streamed from its release date of Sept. 6. This option is only included with the Ultimate tier but there’s still great value for money to be enjoyed if you decide to go down that route.
Typically, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate costs $16.99 per month, but new users can access the entire library, including Starfield for just $1 in their first month. This will allow players to experience Starfield on Xbox One for next to no cost at all. This is by far the best option for those who are intrigued by the game but aren’t quite caught up in the waves of hype and anticipation.
To access Starfield on Game Pass, first ensure that all required updates have been installed on your Xbox One console. Head into the Game Pass app and select the Starfield icon. You will be given the option to play the game but it will have a cloud icon next to it, highlighting that this is the cloud version.
The space opera adventure can also be streamed on tablets, mobile devices, and PC. It’s unlikely that a port of Starfield will be arriving for Xbox One anytime soon as the game is tailored towards offering a true next-gen experience meaning that cloud gaming will likely remain the way to go if you want to experience Starfield on Xbox One.

It of course has some drawbacks and there’s likely to be some technical hiccups along the way. That said, if you want to experience Starfield without putting down the cash for a whole new console then it is by far your best option.
