Is it at their discretion or is this discrimination?

Colorado Family Kicked Out of Hilton Hotel Because Management Saw Their Homeless Sign

A Colorado woman confronted a Hilton Hotel manager after she believes she was mistreated. Currently homeless, this woman and her family rely on hotels to provide a place for them to stay. When a Hilton manager noticed their homeless sign, she says that they canceled her family’s room.

Tay (@dacrazykillatay) was staying with her family at a Colorado Hilton while they search for a place to live. She claims that, when her husband came through the door of the hotel, he was carrying his homeless sign that helps them obtain money to live throughout the day. A manager spotted it and immediately canceled their room. Tay confronts the manager about what happened, saying they “keep discriminating against us!!”

Tay walks up to the front desk in the pajamas she was wearing when she found out they couldn’t stay there anymore. She asks, “Can I get it in writing that we’re not allowed to pay for a hotel stay because we’re homeless?” The manager replies with, “I cannot provide that.”

Tay demands the manager tell her she can’t stay there because she’s homeless. She states, “The Hilton does not allow homeless people to pay for rooms here.” You can hear that Tay is becoming increasingly frustrated as she lays out exactly what happened when her husband entered with his sign. According to her, her husband was laying out his card for them to take payment when they canceled the room. She asks, “You canceled it because we’re homeless, correct?” The manager finally relents and states, “Yes, that is correct.”

Commenters immediately started commenting on Tay’s video, some taking her side and others siding with Hilton Hotel. One commenter bluntly stated, “Any private company can deny services.” Another commenter applauded them, “Thank you, Hilton. Safety first.” One commenter questioned Tay and her family’s decision to stay at that particular hotel. She commented, “If I’m homeless I’m not staying at the Hilton. I’m stretching every dollar. Even the Holiday Inn would be a no for me.”

One commenter explained, “Hilton does not have a corporate policy that bans people who are homeless from renting a room. However, anyone checking in, regardless of their housing situation, must meet standard hotel requirements.” Another stated that this would be an “easy discrimination lawsuit unless they have something in their policy that allows them to say they don’t have to give you service.” Commenters continue to share their opinions on hotel services and your rights when you’re unhoused.
