A musician playing at a Mexican restaurant in Sarasota, Florida, was stopped in his tracks by one of the customers. After asking for his nationality, the customer in question asked the musician how he managed to “get across” the border, as he is Mexican. Without taking any offense, the musician in question clapped back with snappy responses, all while the internet called the customer racist.
Andres Colin shared the brief interaction on TikTok. He is a musician who often performs at restaurants, carrying his guitar with him and singing some tunes. The clip attached above soon became one of his biggest to date. In less than a day, it garnered 1.6 million views, 116,000 likes, and close to 1,300 comments.
The Florida musician was performing at a restaurant and walking the tables, taking song requests. When he approached one of these tables, a man stopped him and asked him, “What nationality are you?” Andres told him he was Mexican. Things got out of hand and inappropriate really fast.
“How did you get across?” the man asked.
Andres, refusing to let the man get under his skin, potentially seeking a reaction from him, chose to respond to him with a witty and classic response. He said, “I called your mom, and I said, ‘Hey, can you transport me?‘”
Everyone at the table, except for the question-asking man, laughed. He instead asked him, referring to crossing the border, “How did it work back in those days?“
Again, the musician responded sarcastically. He told him that coming to the United States was possible via airplane, bus, and even horse. Surprised, he explained that horse tours are available in Tulum. He was most likely joking, as Tulum is not on the U.S.-Mexico border.
The back-and-forth was suddenly stopped, as a driver backed into another vehicle right in front of the restaurant.
Social Media Reactions
The interaction sparked many reactions online, especially from those who bashed the Florida man’s attitude and questions. One said, “You can tell when someone is asking in a racist way, and you can tell when someone is curious. He’s definitely racist.” Another one commented, “That’s such a weird question to ask at a Mexican restaurant.”
Other viewers applauded Andres’ handling of the situation. One said, “The your mom response is GOLD.” Another one added, “I called your mom was such a Mexican answer. I love it.”
Thankfully for Andres, his most viral clips involve people requesting songs and enjoying his music, meaning that negativity is borderline nonexistent.
