While we tend to get used to many things in our states, there are a few that can still be concerning, especially when they seem to get worse every year. One example is what’s happening in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where residents are dealing with flooded streets following heavy rainfall. While some people are shocked to see parts of the city underwater, a few locals claim this is nothing out of the ordinary and something people should probably get used to by now.

Have never experienced this, visiting Ft Lauderdale from St. Pete

The post comes from a Redditor who claims they are visiting Fort Lauderdale, Florida, all the way from St. Pete. As you can see in the post, aptly titled “Have never experienced this…”, the OP shows a couple of pictures of a parking lot covered in floodwater. One of the pictures even shows the water level almost reaching the inside of a car, which is extremely concerning for some locals.

Now, while this is more than enough to sound a few alarms among the community, several who commented on OP’s post emphasized that this is normal, especially during the season.

As many may know, large parts of Florida were once swamplands. Over the years, however, many of these areas have been paved over to make way for roads, buildings, and other developments. Unfortunately, this can create problems during periods of heavy rainfall, as water has fewer places to drain away naturally. As a result, flooding can become a recurring issue in certain parts of the state.

Yet, it seems that Fort Lauderdale is experiencing more flooding this time around, as even some locals claim the levels are higher than in previous years. While some were quick to dismiss this situation, mentioning that it was expected, some are actually concerned.

Florida Redditors Divided Over Floodwater Concerns

Several Redditors who saw the post just took this as another normal rainy day in Fort Lauderdale, mentioning that people shouldn’t pay a lot of attention to this.

“Get used to it.“

“I’ve lived in Florida for over 30 years, and this kind of rain and flooding is pretty typical from time to time throughout the state.“

Still, there are a few who believe that the reason as to why this happens is because the government decided to pave over swamplands, which has led to situations like this one.

“It’s almost like paving over a state full of swamps to build suburbs was a bad idea.“

Ultimately, and according to a few Redditors, despite this being “the norm” in some parts of the state, it is still a concerning occurrence, and one people shouldn’t dismiss so quickly. After all, just because residents have grown accustomed to flooded streets doesn’t mean the problem should be ignored, especially when it can disrupt everyday life and potentially put people and their property at risk.
