It amazes me day in, day out what modders do with various games. I think my first introduction to that was the Borderlands 2 Reborn mod, bringing me into what’s possible. Since then, I’ve seen a lot of different mods like Stalker’s various mods and the expansions being made for Fallout 4. Every time I think they can’t be more ambitious, they manage to do just that. One such case is a group of Dark Souls modders, now working towards creating Dark Souls: Nightfall, a fan sequel to the original game.

Dark Souls

How that kind of thing is even possible is beyond my realm of understanding, but here we are. The team of Grimrukh, AinTunez, Meowmaritus, and various others is working towards a sequel. They plan this to expand the lore of the Dark Souls games, while not clashing with the base game in any way. That’s no easy feat, given just how much you have to consider. This story will accompany a brand new world which, while having no new assets, aims to feel fresh and interesting to explore.

It’s not a sequel without some updated systems though. The team is at work on some changes to the combat system, for example. This plans to be more fast-paced and heavily modified, functioning like a more complex version of the QuickSouls mod. There will also be modified enemies with new animations, and a huge heap of voice-acted NPC characters. The mod overall aims to be a much more ambitious take on Dark Souls than mods before it.

There’s no planned release date for this Dark Souls fan sequel, but expect it to be a long way away. These things usually take a lot of time, since modding teams aren’t as trained or efficient as regular developers. That type of expectation is unrealistic. When it does come out though, it’ll no doubt be an exciting mod provided they get everything right. That’s just my thoughts though, and I’d like to hear what you have to say in the comments below.
