Want to know what a Stained item is in Darkest Dungeon 2? Although choosing the best team of heroes and improving their skills is an integral successful journey part, there are many other ways to make your characters stronger. And, if you have already unlocked all the desired skills and are ready to fight, meeting with Cultists is a great way to test your mastery. In addition, you can get rare Unforgettable Trinkets by defeating these enemies. And while all Trinkets come with descriptions, you’ll find it hard to understand how the Stained item works in Darkest Dungeon 2, so we’re here to help you.
What Is a Stained Item in Darkest Dungeon 2
If you have spent at least 1-2 hours in the Darkest Dungeon 2 world, you probably know what Trinkets are and how these work. Depending on the item type, you can equip these to definite heroes and reward them with buffs. Some Trinkets have restrictions or additional requirements, but the basic description of the item is enough to understand what it is for. But once you fight the cultists and get the Stained and Cultist Trinkets, most likely, you will have difficulty.
Although Cultist Trinkets apply to all heroes, equipping this item will not give you any buffs, and the reason is Stained Trinkets. Stained is an auxiliary Trinket without which no Cultist Trinkets will work. Simply put, you must equip any Stained item as an activator for Cultist Trinkets.
There are nine variations of Stained items, also known as Dark Impulse, in Darkest Dungeon 2. They all have the same icon and can ‘Unlocks the potential of Cultist Trinkets‘ but have different effects. Each Stained item will reward the player with a powerful buff and weakness. For example, by equipping Stained Stun Resist to the hero, he will receive + 25% Stun Resist. But if the hero still gets stunned, he will miss the turn and take 50% more damage.

Such debuffs seem unreasonably high, but as we said, the Stained item is just an activator for more powerful Cultist Trinkets. You can combine any Stained and Cultist Trinkets to create the perfect buff for any character. For example, using the previously mentioned Stained Stun Resist paired with Hardened Heart Cultist Trinket will give you the following effects:
- +25% Stun Resist
- +50% DMG if you stun
- +200% Light Resist
- +200% Bleed Resist
- +200% Burn Resist
- +2 DMG on every resist
Debaff does not seem so dangerous and critical if looking at the buffs list. So all you need to do is skillfully combine Cultist and Stained Trinkets to give your heroes the maximum boost and make your path comfortable and profitable.
Darkest Dungeon 2 is available on PS, Xbox, and PC.
