Dave Portnoy, president of Barstool Sports, continues to obsess over Angel Reese. During an interview on the Pick Em podcast, Portnoy laid into Angel, claiming the WNBA star (with nearly five million Instagram followers) makes everything about herself.
The wild assertion came after the podcast co-hosts mentioned Angel’s attendance at the WNBA championship game between the New York Liberty and the Minnesota Lynx. Her presence certainly sparked conversation, as she was seen wearing a top that supported both teams.
“I’m a girls girl,” she wrote on X/Twitter. “We ALL FAM. This year of women’s basketball was legendary [and] I’m so glad to be [a part] of it!” However, not everybody was excited about Angel’s attendance, including Portnoy.
Dave Portnoy Said Angel Reese Would Be ‘Crucified’ if She Were Anybody Else
“The last time I saw Angel, she had [Travis] Kelce’s ex [on her podcast],” he said. “If a male was doing what Angel Reese is doing, she would get crucified, regardless of skin color, regardless of anything.”
Later, Dave mentioned Angel’s team, the Chicago Sky, and also discussed her season-ending injury, which he questioned the legitimacy of.
“She’s a rookie in the league whose team sucked, who assed out at the end of the season with an injury,” he said before saying she “won’t shut up about herself.”
“Imagine if your first-round draft pick had the season she had,” he continued. “Got injured in a questionable injury, assed out, and then started a podcast gossiping about everything in the league as a rookie. Please.”
“Meanwhile, Caitlin is head down, just f***ing in the gym; you don’t hear a peep from her.”
Angel Isn’t Worried About Dave … And neither Are Her Fans
Dave’s ignorant comments don’t represent the collective. Regardless of what her detractors might say, Angel had a remarkable rookie season. Plus, she set a number of records along the way. The Sky didn’t make the playoffs this year. However, it was widely known that they were in a rebuilding phase after losing star players. Additionally, a number of their key performers, including Kamilla Cardoso and Elizabeth Williams, suffered injuries that kept them off the court.
“I don’t like Reese, but we can’t compare it to a successful league like NBA or anything,” one social media user wrote. “Their league just started making a little money and she does help the league get viewers. The more WNBA has exposure the more they make. It worked [since you] guys are talking about it.”
Another user called out Dave for his rage-baiting antics, reminding him that Angel hadn’t played since early September due to her injury. Additionally, before being sidelined, she led the league in rebounds, averaging 13.1 per game. “She haven’t played since her injury, but bringing her up and bashing her day more about you,” they commented online.
Angel hasn’t responded to Dave’s out-of-pocket remarks, and it’s unclear if she ever will. However, she’s shared that she loves it when people mention her name, whether it is positive or negative. “Hating pays them bills,” she said in an Instagram Live video.
