Looks snazzy. Developed by the same studio as the overlooked Risk of Rain, Deadbolt looks like a combination of that pixelized graphics style combined with the side-scrolling noir of Gunpoint. Throw in the garish blood of The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile and you’ve got the feel of Deadbolt. It has more going for it than just a unique look, however. There’s a pretty interesting premise to go along with the flashy violence.
In Deadbolt, players take on the role of the Grim Reaper, who is more like a hitman than the cloaked stalker he is usually portrayed as. Utilizing stealth and over thirty weapons, you must complete a series of missions, such as assassinations and investigating clues in order to solve mysteries. Players need to be careful when attacking the variety of enemies that Deadbolt throws at them, as the Reaper is a bit fragile – he dies in only one hit. Although the developers claim you can play either a quiet, sneaky style or go in with guns blazing, the trailer clearly puts an emphasis on the stealth moves that the Reaper can employ. Charging in with a one-hit life bar probably will lead to several level restarts.
In addition to having an interesting graphical style and a unique approach to gameplay, the Steam page for Deadbolt shows that it will release with a level editor as well as Steam Workshop support, which usually adds a great deal of depth and longevity. You’ll be able to take on the army of the undead with the Grim Reaper in Deadbolt within the next few months.
