Daniel Southworth, the voice of Vergil in the Devil May Cry series, might have hinted at a possible remake of the iconic action franchise. During his appearance at Power Morphicon 2024, Southworth casually mentioned recording lines for a game where he reprised the role of a ‘young Vergil.’ Capcom has yet to announce any remake of old DMC games but him saying Nero’s dad’s name has fueled the rumor mill.
“[…] In fact I just finished a video game… two weeks ago, actually, three or four weeks ago. They hired me to play this, uhh, character- I, I don’t want to say any titles or anything, because I’m known for my spilling the beans,” said Southworth nonchalantly while his co-hosts were looking slightly nervous.
“But they asked me to do my voice, the way it was, way back in the 2004 or whatever, ‘Can you do the younger Vergil version?'”
There’s no doubt that Southworth will return to voice Vergil in the upcoming Netflix anime series. Nevertheless, the fact he explicitly said ‘game’ has sent fans into a frenzy and might mean the character plays a pivotal role in said project.
Aside from DMC 5, the first game and the prequel 3 were the ones where the game plot revolves around Vergil. Fans are also speculating that the project might not be a DMC remake and could delve deeper into the Sparda family story.
As he himself admitted, Southworth has a history of letting information slip prematurely. Back in 2015, in another Power Ranger event, he made headlines after unintentionally leaking a DMC reunion for the fifth entry.
Recalling his previous blunder, fans like @frogjog8822 joked online, saying, “I swear to God if he did it again like DMC5-“
“The way Johnny [Yong Bosch]’s smile faded when he said ‘the younger Vergil voice’ he was like oh ** he just leaked it,” wrote @Vortexxian on YouTube.
Capcom has yet to announce any plans for a Devil May Cry sequel, prequel, or remake. However, looking back at the studio’s modus operandi, helped by a recent track record with successful remakes like Resident Evil 4, has fans optimistic. Many are hoping for a faithful remake of DMC 1 with better action control and losing all of its proto-RE4 elements.
