Donald Trump has broken his silence about Justin Truedeau‘s resignation. In a surprise move on Monday, the Canadian prime minister announced his decision to step down from power, prompting a shady response from the president-elect.
Trump took to his Truth Socials platform to give a sarcastic response. “Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State,” he began. The Republican president continued his argument that the United States can no longer support Canada’s trade deficits. “Justin Trudeau knew this and resigned,” he declared before hammering on his desire to see Canada join the US.
“If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!”
It is no surprise that Trump delivered a snarky remark, given that his election victory was what primarily sped up Trudeau’s downfall. The 23rd Canadian Prime minister had been facing calls for resignation over poor immigration policies and economic challenges. However, after Trump’s win, he threatened to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian goods, heightening fears about an economic collapse in the neighboring country.
In November, Trudeau made a surprise visit to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence to discuss US-Canada relations. Unfortunately, the meeting did nothing to diffuse the threats, with the Apprentice star floating the idea of turning Canada into an additional US state. Although it was presented as a joke, many believe there is some truth to it.
Justin Trudeau Talks Fighting ‘Internal Battles’ In Speech, No Mention Of Donald Trump
Worries further heightened about Trudeau’s ability to ward off Trump’s threat when, in December, the Deputy Prime Minister, Chrystia Freeland, announced her resignation. In her scathing statement, she warned of the world leader’s inability to protect the country. “Our country is facing a grave challenge,” she urged.
In his resignation speech on Monday, January 6, 2025, Trudeau seemingly confirmed Freeland’s fears. Speaking outside his residence at Rideau Cottage, he explained his decision, revealing that it wasn’t due to his inability to fight. “As you all know, I am a fighter, and I am not someone who backs away from a fight, particularly when a fight is as important as this one is,” he began, per The Independent.
“This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I am having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election.”
Despite his resignation, Justin Trudeau will remain prime minister until the Liberal Party selects its next leader. The Liberal Party has until March 24 to decide.
