Ever since Valve updated Dota 2 to Dota 2: Reborn, it seems they have been putting out fires. Dota 2 far and away the most played game on Steam (along with Counter-Strike: Global Offensive), but the game took a serious blow when the unfinished, bug-riddled update to the game engine took effect. Valve still has some tricks up their sleeves, however, and something they have always done well is in creating fun variations of the Dota 2 formula in order to celebrate the holidays in style.

Trick or treat.
Trick or treat.

Enter this year’s Halloween game mode: Haunted Colosseum. Valve details the new custom game mode fully on their Dota 2 blog, but just know that Haunted Colosseum is a lot of chaotic fun. Replacing the standard objectives of a Dota 2 game are five control points. When your team controls three or more, you will begin to add to your score. The first team to 5000 wins. It sounds very straightforward, but the addition of traps makes the game a great diversion and change of pace from the regular Dota 2 game mode.

Traps in the Haunted Colosseum are activated simply by hitting a switch, but the key is that the triggered trap can hit anyone from either team. This amplifies some of the foundations of regular play in Dota 2: positioning, communication, and map awareness become extremely important when, at any moment, a giant pendulum can swing down and wipe out an unprepared team. There are other quirks to the gameplay, such as restorative treats that drop from fallen foes and Behemoths that appear to defend either team and hopefully keep the game competitive. However, the traps are what really make the Haunted Colosseum a unique game mode. You can check it out through the “Custom Games” tab after loading up Dota 2. Check out the trailer below:
