It shouldn’t be a surprise that we’re always creating terminology to understand certain game mechanics in the gaming world. However, there are a few that are real eyebrow-raisers. This time, I’m talking about the ‘backshot’ term, which the Dragon Ball: Sparking ZERO community is using casually. I don’t say this as a critique, mind you; even I use it to describe one of the game’s most annoying combos. Still, it is a bit strange to hear this term that has a different connotation used so normally in a fighting game.
To provide a bit of context and without breaking our site’s family-friendly guidelines, the term “backshot” has some NSFW connotations that shouldn’t apply to a fighting game like Dragon Ball: Sparking ZERO. Fortunately, players don’t use it in that way. Instead, they use it to describe a combo that hits players from the back, and it is challenging to escape.
As you can see in the above example, Reddit user Erbody_luvs is asking about how to get out of the “backshots” in the game. This combo happens when a player attacks another from the back and sort of locks them into a combo where they can just spam rush attacks from behind. It is certainly one of the most annoying moves in Dragon Ball: Sparking ZERO, and the only way to escape a “backshot” is with a Super Counter, which is by pressing up and Square or X, depending on the controller you’re using. Pulling it off requires almost perfect timing, but you can avoid these combos once you nail that technique.
Combos aside, seeing that the community has come to terms with this word is fun. It is nice to see everyone talking about it, and it certainly has led to many wild situations and YouTube video titles with a double sense behind them. I can’t help but wonder what other terms will become part of Sparking ZERO, but for now, I guess we can all handle backshots—the term, I mean.
