After you reach the second continent in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, you will meet a strange old man who will introduce you to the Monster Arena Tournament. While the game mostly consists of you fighting enemies yourself, you can also participate in an optional tournament to get extra rewards. Instead of entering the ring yourself, you need to gather powerful, friendly monsters who will compete against other monsters. Besides obtaining money, you can also get useful seeds and gear.
How To Start Monster Arena Tournament in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake
You can only participate in the Monster Arena Tournament once you have found three friendly monsters in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. Unlike the common enemies you often encounter, these creatures won’t attack you on sight, and they can usually be found in cities. I highly recommend having the Monster Wrangler class on your team to capture them easily.
Once you have enough monsters to form a party, you can head to the arena which is usually located underground. The first one you will encounter is located in Romaria, but you can find other arenas in other big cities. Here is the full list:
- Romaria
- Ibis
- Manoza
- Cantlin
Note that you must challenge the Monster Arena Tournament ranks in order. That means you have to start at Romaria and finish all the challenges before you can participate in the Ibis Town.

To participate in the Monster Arena Tournament, you will need to pay a fee. However, as long as you win, you can make even more money than the cash you spent. You will also get other valuable rewards that will make your journey easier.

Other Tips
Here are some of the tips I can give you so you can easily complete the Monster Arena Tournament. First of all, whenever you have Monster Wrangler on your team, you can use the Animal Instinct ability to detect whether there is a docile monster in the area. It doesn’t cost MP so you can use it whenever you enter a new location.
Sometimes, you can find monsters of the same type on your journey. They are not a waste to catch since if you find dupes, it will increase the level of the first monster you have caught. You may even acquire new skills when you can catch the same type of monster more than once.
Unlike regular combat, you cannot control the movements of your monsters. You can only change their tactics before every clash. I recommend having at least one healer to ensure that your team survives. You won’t be able to change your team member once you enter the arena, and all damage your monsters take will remain after every combat.
