Nintendo opened its Tuesday Direct presentation with a game trailer nobody expected: Daemon X Machina, a mecha-busting, jet-fueled game featuring Gundam-esque suits of armor battling much larger mechanical monstrosities with a variety of staple weapons for the genre.

A heck of an opening. Daemon X Machina didn’t give us anything more than a few flashy battles, but that was enough. The game releases for Nintendo Switch sometime in 2019. Fan reaction was mixed, with most observers still eagerly awaiting Smash Bros. It’s a surprise either way, but not an unwelcome one.

A few different landscapes presented themselves in Daemon X Machina, including a red-skyed city and a rocky desert as the mechs flew through the air and glided on the ground. In some of the battles, multiple suits worked together to take down the boss. It’s unclear if these supporting fighters are other players or NPC combatants. Their inclusion is sure to make the action that much more dynamic.

The trailer is worth a second look. There are a few things you miss the first time around due to the quick cuts and the up-close shots of the mechs and giant bosses. Now that you’ve seen it again, what do you think of Daemon X Machina? Let us know in the comments!
