The game that everyone was waiting for has been fleshed out a little more.  Bethesda showed a lot more about Fallout:76.

Some of the rumors were put to rest, but with that some more controversial things have been confirmed.

Todd Howard himself came out to show what they had been working on for Fallout:76. Howard started things off with the very cool trailer that they had already shown at the Microsoft conference earlier today:

The trailer shows the standard Fallout set pieces we have come to expect from the series, and makes sure you see multiple player characters which translates to the rumored online functionality.

So yes, Fallout:76 WILL be always online.  The rumors of this game have similarities with survival games like Rust have been partially true.  Howard explains that although you can play the game completely on your own if you prefer, you will not be alone in the wasteland.  Describing the gameplay as “softcore survival”, the player will leave the vault to rebuild West Virginia with a dozen or so other places per instance.  There will be no permadeath, and everything about your character follows you- which translates to you won’t lose your stuff if and when you die.

One of the first things Todd Howard shows after the trailer is a player fighting another player.  The enemy players name shows up, and after a short shootout, the player kills the enemy and receives what looks like a bottlecap bounty.  So while there won’t be tons of people roaming the map to attack you, there seems to be the possibility of small groups of players fighting each other.

Howard shows gameplay videos of groups of vault dwellers teaming up to fight various mutated enemies. The gameplay looks good, the gunplay looks tight, but there is no mention of the trademark of the series since Fallout 3- the VATS system.

There will be dedicated servers, and a fancy collectors edition.  The game is set to release this November.  If you have some worries abut the always online feature, and the possibility of being griefed by other players- then sign up for the beta and test it out before you play.

Decades of video games and comic books have molded me into the nerd with a heart of gold that I am today.  I can go full fanboy one second, and then gleefully play devil's advocate the next- life is just more fun that way.
