A pickup truck in Staten Island, a borough of New York City, New York, that is owned by an NYPD officer, has been revealed to owe more than $36,000 in parking tickets over the course of four years.
This revelation has caused various conversations from TikTok users, including one concerning being able to register or even drive the vehicle with so many fines attached to it.
The officer to whom the vehicle belongs, James Giovansanti, is allegedly the second-worst speeder in the entire city, according to a street movement intended to reduce road violence, Streetsblog NYC. An editor for Streetsblog, J.K. Trotter, reportedly took a ferry to this officer’s precinct to interview him about his vehicle, but was told he was not present.
Trotter had an envelope in his hand that contained information concerning an interview he wanted to have with the officer. Specifically, he stated, “We’re trying to get an interview with him for a story.” The officer he was speaking to replied with, “I’m not going to see him, so I don’t want to...”
TikTok users took to the replies to share their opinion on the situation, with one person saying, “That department needs a full investigation for sure..“
In response to this, the editor took a bus and instead went directly to the officer’s home to leave the envelope behind. However, he stayed behind to determine if anyone would accept the envelope.
Reactions to New York Officer With Over $36,000 in Speeding Tickets
More users took to the replies to share their thoughts, with many focusing on the way that the editor was being spoken to, especially when informed that he couldn’t film inside the police precinct.
One commenter wrote, “They can tell you to leave for filming and if you don’t, you’ll be trespassed. However, it’s not against the law so you can’t get arrested for any type of voyeurism charge.“
Other commenters were also focused on the number of parking tickets equivalent to $36,000 over the course of four years, with one person writing, “THAT IS A TICKET EVERY 5 DAYS.” Two other users wrote, “That’s like 2-3 tickets a week for 4 years. ðŸ˜,” and “$36,000 is truly insane and upsetting.“
It is unclear if the police precinct that the officer works at in Staten Island is aware of this particular situation or if they’ve commented on it at all. According to the video’s end, the editor is still unable to get in touch with the officer.
