EA, Battlefield‘s publisher, has announced its plans to remain somewhat flexible for the franchise in the face of the impending GTA 6 release, which will take place in Autumn 2025. However, this release window for GTA 6 means it could still get delayed as it’s a little too close to 2026. With that in mind, EA is staying vigilant about potential GTA 6 delays so that its release won’t coincide with the grandest Battlefield game they’ve ever made.
The plan was confirmed by EA CEO Andrew Wilson himself in a financial call and investor meeting. Wilson stated that if something were to happen in 2026 or near April 2026, which is Battlefield 6‘s maximum release window, then a reactive delay might be necessary. Of course, that “something” is no doubt GTA 6— something even other AAA dev studios and publishers have been trying to avoid lest it overshadows their game in terms of, well, everything.
“I do believe that this year might be a nuanced year relative to [the] competition. There may be some things happening in the year that may cause us to think differently about our launch timing.
“[We’ve] invested more in this Battlefield than any Battlefield before… We’re looking for this to be the biggest Battlefield we’ve ever made,” says Wilson according to Eurogamer.
It’s worth noting that the April 2026 release date for Battlefield 6 is a window, and it could very well be released earlier. Traditionally, some of the most successful Battlefield games have always aimed at a September, October, or November release date, or Autumn/Fall. But with GTA 6 taking up 2025’s Autumn release window, Battlefield 6 is giving a wide berth, hence the “earlier than April 2026” window.
EA might well be forced to release the biggest Battlefield they’ve ever made in a season that’s not ideal for the franchise. However, if GTA 6 does get delayed to early 2026 (as is the general expectation), then that leaves Autumn 2025 and Autumn 2026 as the opportune open spots for Battlefield 6. Both, however, don’t seem ideal.
Release Early or Late?
At Battlefield 6‘s current state, which is pre-Alpha, it might take at least a year to get the game ready for release in a version that won’t result in mass refund petitions (like what happened in Battlefield 2042). So, an Autumn 2025 release date for Battlefield 6 seems detrimental to the game’s development.
At the same time (and in case GTA 6 does get delayed to early 2026), then an Autumn 2026 release date for Battlefield 6 might be too long a wait, especially after all the hype EA drummed up this early on. Still, it might be good for the game in the long term.
One thing to consider is that the GTA franchise has also developed a habit of claiming Autumn release dates or the start of the holiday season. So that really leaves a lot of publishers and developers waiting for GTA 6‘s movement to actually make plans for their own game releases.
Either way, Battlefield 6 potentially trying to avoid GTA 6 doesn’t exactly sound confident or promising for the game, especially after EA kept touting it as the biggest Battlefield ever. If you’re lucky enough, however, you can potentially oversee what’s going on in Battlefield 6 by joining their Battlefield Labs program.
