The original The Walking Dead series ended on November 20th, 2022. Many fans wondered what happened to their favorite characters after the sendoff, which only opened the door for more stories. Well, they won’t have to worry as the Walking Dead universe is expanding. Fans can anticipate several new titles developed by AMC in the upcoming months. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming The Walking Dead spin-offs.
In 2015, Fear the Walking Dead marked the first spin-off release within The Walking Dead universe. Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple expressed:
“It’s been ten years ‘gone bye’. What lies ahead are two more to come and stories and stories to tell beyond that. We have a lot of thrilling [stories] left to tell on TWD, and then, this end will be a beginning of more Walking Dead.”
Gimple promised a grand finale that would pave the way for fresh premieres, introducing brand-new stories, characters, familiar faces and places, and new voices.
The Walking Dead: Dead City
The upcoming spinoff featuring Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) will take place in Manhattan. Completely cut off from the mainland, Manhattan teems with both living and undead inhabitants. The premise revolves around Maggie and Negan’s quest to locate her son Hershel, who has been taken captive.

Dead City will immediately follow the season 8 mid-finale of Fear the Walking Dead. Aside from Cohan and Morgan, additional actors joining the series are Gaius Charles, Mahina Napoleon, Željko Ivanek, Jonathan Higginbotham, Karina Ortiz, Caleb Reese Paul, and Charlie Solis. Notably, Logan Kim (Ghostbusters: Afterlife) has been recast in the role of Hershel Rhee, which was previously portrayed by Kien Michael Spiller. The narrative of Dead City will take place a few years after The Walking Dead finale, necessitating the recasting decision.
In a more extensive teaser, it is unveiled that, inexplicably, Negan has become a wanted fugitive. The landscape of Manhattan appears utterly chaotic and turbulent. This paired with the tumultuous relationship between Maggie and Negan, which has reignited into a full-blown conflict. It seems their previous fragile truce has completely shattered, leaving them once again at odds with each other.
AMC and AMC+ have scheduled the debut of The Walking Dead: Dead City for June 18, 2023, at 10 p.m. ET.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon
Plans were unveiled to feature Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon) and Melissa McBride (Carol Peletier) in a spin-off series. However, McBride made the decision to step away from the project, citing the need for a break after dedicating 12 years to filming The Walking Dead. Additionally, the filming location in France did not align with her schedule. The storyline will now center completely on Daryl, who finds himself washed ashore in France without any recollection of how or why he ended up there.
Filming for the series ended in March 2023. Although not confirmed, the show has also supposedly begun filing for a second season. Rumors also circulate about Melissa McBride potentially joining the cast for season 2, but there is currently no confirmed information.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Norman Reedus confirmed that this show will be very different from The Walking Dead in both look and tone. He went on to say, “It’s kind of a reset for me. Everything kind of breathes in a romantic way. We have the backdrop of France, we have the Catacombs, the Eiffel Tower… The whole vibe is different.”
Currently, there is no confirmed release date for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.
The Walking Dead: (Untitled) Rick and Michonne Spin-off
The final panel for The Walking Dead at San Diego Comic-Con 2022 delivered the most significant revelation of all: a Rick and Michonne series that will chronicle their remarkable ongoing journey. Although the poster initially indicated a 2023 release, recent news from Danai Gurira’s interview with Self clarified that the series is now slated for a 2024 debut. This title will also replace the previously planned trilogy of Rick Grimes movies that were announced. The working title for the series is currently Summit.
