Florida gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds has been put in the spotlight of the data center debate in the Sunshine State, as his ties to the industry have come under scrutiny from both Republican and Democratic opponents. Florida residents reacted to the scrutiny, with many doubting that Donalds would oppose data center developers if elected.
As reported by Central Florida Times, data centers have become a defining issue in Florida’s race for governor, turning the election into a referendum on the state’s future. Republican frontrunner Donalds is backed by major technology companies and defends the strategic use of data centers for future growth, drawing criticism from opponents on both sides.
Democratic candidate David Jolly, for example, supports a moratorium on new data centers until communities establish additional protections. Republican candidates Paul Renner and James Fishback also oppose new data centers and argue that Donalds has ties that are too close to the industry.
Donalds has reportedly fired back, saying that he will follow his voters’ wishes. He also recently introduced a federal bill that could require data centers to secure private electricity generation and water supplies.
Florida Reacts to Byron Donalds’ Stance on Data Centers
Residents on Reddit’s r/Florida also expressed skepticism about Donalds’ stance. One of them said: “You can’t brag about being endorsed by Trump and then claim that you’re going to fight against AI and data centers.”
Someone else added: “Byron gonna blanket Florida with data centers. You think utilities are bad now, just wait until he’s in the governor’s mansion.” Another resident agreed: “He claims he is against data centers, but he has accepted millions of dollars from data centers for his campaign. So yeah, I am sure he will block data centers… not.”
One user even argued that “he’ll say anything to get elected. Don’t trust this dude,” urging others to look for alternatives.
Another issue raised by a local was how the state’s growth was affecting its water supply: “Remember Florida, our aquifer is already in serious trouble. Do not let Byron Donald’s near office. Because if you do, we’re going to run out of water, it’s going to be poisoned, and you’re not going to be able to sleep due to the noise. In addition, your electric bills are going to skyrocket. Do not vote for Byron Donalds.”
It remains to be seen who will become Florida’s next governor, but whoever wins is expected to play a major role in shaping the future of data centers in the state.
