HoYoverse is in the middle of a canonical event, where the stars have aligned in such a way for its flagship games. Honkai Impact 3rd recently released its Part 2, Genshin Impact is in the middle of Fontaine’s story, and Honkai Star Rail has a new planet. However, for the following updates, all these games will receive new characters: a cowboy, a father, and the class president, respectively. What makes them unique? HoYoverse made these husbandos and waifus like I like my coffee: hot, black, and white — or rather, Arlecchino, Boothill, and Fu Hua share a similar design. Whether you play one or all of these games, Cognosphere knows how to keep its audience coming back for more.
Are the New Black and White Characters Proving that HoYoverse Copies Its Own Designs?
For the sake of brevity, the answer is no. It is obvious how HoYoverse’s pipeline among its games is similar, so much so that all three are about to get salt-and-pepper monochrome characters soon. However, this has become more evident since the company switched from miHoYo to HoYoverse. The company stressed that this change reflected its mission to create a vast virtual world, a metaverse, that integrates different media. Also, those who have played two games have noticed the similarities between their worlds or the “crossovers.” I am explicitly speaking of cases like Welt Yang or Fischl. They have even “borrowed” names, designs, or the entire character as if it were the Final Fantasy saga.
One of the new HoYoverse characters is Fu Hua, who has black-and-white Garuda skin, which looks more like her Phoenix version and distinguishes her from her OG form. Boothill will be the first half-cyborg, half-human cowboy character for Honkai Star Rail. They allocated a good percentage of profits to create a playable Arlecchino and her boss form for Genshin Impact.
Each is unique in its own way, but I can’t deny that HoYoverse has a particular type of taste of waifu and husbando, as you can see with Arlecchino and Boothill’s looks. Even though more characters follow this same aesthetic, like Senti and Coralie, I want to keep seeing more designs like these. Besides, each one offers a different kit, team role, and playstyle. Maybe other players won’t appreciate the similarities; the good thing is that you don’t have to have them all. But for sure, there will be one character that you will love enough to give all your wallet to.
