The wait is over as we are entering the wasteland of the Mad Max universe once more in 2024, but for now, we just have a taste. Warner Bros. released the trailer for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, featuring Anya Taylor-Joy as the titled character going up against Chris Hemsworth as the brutal antagonist, Dementus (seen below). George Miller is back in the director’s chair while taking on writing duties with Fury Road co-writer Nick Lathouris.
As expected, the footage is a colorful spectacle filled with chaos and recognizable imagery. It takes place 45 years after the end of the world, leading to nothing but carnage. The trailer shows a young, captured Furiosa and her attempts to fight back to freedom. While we know how things go in the long run based on Fury Road, we will learn more about the character who Charlize Theron previously played.
Furiosa Trailer: Anya Taloy-Joy and Chris Hemsworth Lead the Brutal, Stylish Fury Road Prequel
By the time the film releases in theaters next year, it will be about nine years since Fury Road. The film revived a seemingly dead franchise into becoming 2015’s biggest phenomenon. While it received critical and commercial success, its biggest surprise was when the Academy Awards were on. While blockbusters tend to grab some visual-related awards but nothing significant, Fury Road won six Oscars, categories including film editing, costume design, sound editing, sound mixing, hair and makeup, and production design. It was nominated for four other categories, including Best Picture.
The two leads will be joined by some newcomers to the universe, like them, while having some people reprising younger versions of their Fury Road characters. The film will feature Tom Burke (Mank), Angus Sampson (Fury Road), Daniel Webber (The Punisher), Nathan Jones (Fury Road), Goran D. Kleut (Alien: Covenant), and Lachy Hulme (Preacher).
The film will be a first for the two leading stars. The Queen’s Gambit star has dabbled with fight scenes, but nothing at this scale of being an action lead. Meanwhile, the Marvel actor has been known in roles that are charming and fun, even when he is taking down enemies. It should be exciting for fans of his to see him in a darker, villainous role.
Furiosa will be released in theaters on May 24, 2024
