A recent trailer for an upcoming full-motion video game (FMV) entitled Gamer Girl has received significant backlash, and it appears that Sony decided to take down the video from YouTube.
Developed by FMV Future and Wales Interactive, with the latter acting as a publisher as well, Gamer Girl puts the player in the shoes of a streaming moderator for Abi, a gamer who is trying to make it big as a content creator. Down the line of her streaming career, the moderator will help control the chat’s comments, behavior, and influence as they virtually hang out with Abi.
Equipped with a branching storyline, your choices as moderator and Abi’s actions in the real world will have consequences. Beware in the chat for online friends could be lurking in the shadows.
With a teaser that shows the live-action gameplay with Abi (aka Abicake99) interacting with her moderator and chat in the stream, we’re shown brief glimpses into what the general story will be. There seems to be some drama surrounding her streaming life, as the outrun music kicks up right after Abi walks into a dark and sketchy area.
Unfortunately for the developers, there has been a wave of disappointing comments from users on YouTube and Twitter toward Gamer Girl. The trailer was released on July 16 but has since been taken down by Sony officials. There are a couple of accounts that have reposted the trailer (as presented above), however. The comments basically range from calling it a “simp simulator” to being a painful experience to watch, and streamers turning down offers from the developers to include themselves in the video game in the appearance of a cameo.
Rod Breslau, an eSports consultant, tweeted, “the official PlayStation account released a trailer for a new FMV game before quickly deleting it.” He then shares the trailer, and the comments from the upset community seemed to have put Gamer Girl in danger.

Following the negative reception and the pulling of the trailer, Wales Interactive posted a multi-tweet in response and in defense of the game’s nature and purpose. The tweet thread concludes with: “Online abuse is real and is still happening every day — Gamer Girl seeks to raise awareness of this issue.”
Gamer Girl is about the impact user comments and actions have on a streamer’s mental health and wellbeing. The reason why FMV Future created the game was to raise the issue of the toxic environment which can often appear online behind the anonymity of a username…

The game is scheduled for a September release of this year for all major platforms and PC, despite the official announcements of Gamer Girl now being absent. It is unclear if the FMV title will be releasing or not until further information is provided by the developers.
